Earning more with your traffic: A CPAlead Perspective

    Hello Everyone,

    As a member of the CPA industry and online performance business, I've been fortunate enough to learn from a lot of the more successful individuals in CPA marketing and wanted to summarize some of the better practices out there in conjunction with what we see as a network when looking at things. At CPAlead we deal in both incent and non incent for desktop and mobile. Interestingly enough, I've observed (from the network perspective) that the practices employed by many of those who are successful are extremely similar regardless of their traffic type

    This isn't intended to be an all encompassing guidelines to making money online (or CPA). The focus here is in addressing what we've observed (from a network perspective) to be one of the biggest challenges that Affiliates face in taking their existing traffic / earnings to the next level.

    The issue that many Affiliates have is balancing their traffic. When should you focus on growing traffic and when should you try to convert it into revenue?
    More often than not, too many Affiliates try to convert their traffic instead of growing it and ultimately lose in the long run.

    Before discussing when you should not try to monetize, it would be best to mention a few instances when aggressive monetization makes the most sense.

    1) Viral traffic: If you have something that has gone "viral" and is red hot, you need to act quickly since your window of opportunity is limited. If the selling point for you is not sustainable either (single use like a video, image etc) then the situation pressing and you need to act quickly. The likelihood is that it will be distributed eventually, perhaps using your very own methods and you need to use your first to market advantage here.

    2) The going is good, ad wise: It's a rarity but once and a while, an advertiser will allocate too great a budget to an ad and set the payout sky high, much higher than they need to. In this case, get in while the going is good. Become more aggressive and play your hand (don't burn your traffic) as often as you can. As a network, I can tell you that it does happen and those who move quickly cash in. We've seen an offer that should have had a $1.25 payout get listed at $4.00 because the advertiser was being aggressive. Pounce while you can.

    There are other times when its good to be "aggressive" but they share the same theme where you have a limited opportunity and need to move on it.

    How about the rest of the time? The rest of the time should be spent trying to find balance. On the one hand, you need to generate revenue and on the other hand you don't want to burn everything you have to make a buck today then be left high and dry tomorrow. As a network, we see a lot of users generate very low volume then try to cash in. That volume dries up as a result of their aggressive monetization methods and suddenly they're making forum posts with titles like "I have no luck". In reality, we make our own luck. If you're new to online marketing, you should be completely focused on figuring out how to generate traffic as your first field of expertise. There's more than enough platforms out there that will provide you with every piece of technology under the sun so that you can monetize your traffic but none of them are willing or able to help you generate traffic. Always keep that in mind, traffic is a currency and monetization may not necessarily decrease your traffic but I've yet to hear of a single instance where implementing monetization methods increased traffic (although, I've heard more than enough about it decreasing).

    Are all monetization methods bad? No, even the most "aggressive" can be used properly. Take content locking for example, soft locking can simply lock content for a period of time, any network should have that feature available. Why tone it down? Let's say that you're cycling your traffic to build more. As one Affiliate laid out recently, he likes to SEO a website and do nothing in terms of monetization. From there, he tries to sign people up to mailing lists then gets them on fanpages depending on their mailing list. He then pushes his SEO'd site to those fan pages and repeats the cycle. Once he has a big group, he introduces ads that he feels will convert well for that niche. What's interesting is that many of our biggest earners at CPAlead.com have a similar philosophy, where monetization comes later and these Affiliates tend to have the greatest stability. Not because they're fast to monetize but because they know when not to monetize.

    What about the whole balance thing? Well that's important since many of us need a strong cashflow in order to support our efforts to lifestyles. This is when you need to do what any good investor does, "diversify". Some viral traffic for the homerun attempt and the "cash in today" angle, something via SEO for a longer term and all sorts of hybrid strategies within.

    From a network perspective, the most successful Affiliates and those who last the longest plan for today and tomorrow. Playing it day by day doesn't just make it hard to earn a consistent living, it takes a toll on you mentally as its very stressful. Eventually, its hard to stick with it and you move on when you very well may have had enough talent and ability to develop a great source of primary (or secondary income).
