dup content is a myth`

DebbieSprules: If duplicate content is a myth why do they (articlebot dot com I presume) list as their #1 feature that they spin articles and their #2 feature is that they create unique content not seen anywhere else on the web? That plus the fact their testomonials and FAQ are from 2005 makes me questions ther knowledge and authority on current SEO methods.

I disagree that people spin content to hit different keywords. Personally I spin it because i dont like to get messages saying my content has been deleted or denied because its dupe content.

I think you're missing the point. Google giving you some type of big penalty for posting duplicate content to multiple sites this is pretty much a myth.

Google ranks tons of sites with the same content on them all the time.

But having duplicate content on the SAME DOMAIN can cause Google to ignore your site.

Ok so what some are saying is...
Dupe content on same site: Penalty/de-index
Dupe content on other sites: Perfectly fine with negative side effects from google.
The first I've seen first hand and we all agree on that one.
The second part doesn't make any sense at all...

Google's business model is to get people to information on what they are searching for. If they did not sort out dupe content then a user keeps finding the same information that doesn't satisfy their search needs and they go try Bing or Yahoo and Google losses a customer.
I would love to see an example of 2 websites on SERP page 1 with dupe content. Not same or similar because we have spinners and re-writers for those. We are talking about copy and pasted dupe content.

I guess I am just confused how on one hand an entire industry is built around unique content; auto spinners, content hosting sites some of which have human moderators checking for dupe content, search engines stating they dont like dupe content, outsourced writers, successful profitable bloggers, vetern posters that are succeeding, sites like copyscape that scan and check for dupe content. And on the other is a site that hasn't updated itself in 4 years saying they are all wrong.

I had a client website which was ranking #1 for competitive keywords in automobile industry. My client's webmaster created another similar website and copied lots of content from the original website. On top of it, he linked the new website from the original website to get some pagerank. And the result was - the site was moved from page #1 to somewhere beyond page #30 - There was no loss of Pagerank but the rankings were affected. So you can not say that there is no duplicate content penalty. It exists - especially if you link your site to a site with duplicate content.

obviously it is necessary to post exactly what google has stated on this issue since people are still trying to claim this is a myth. Google states the following:

Duplicate content generally refers to substantive blocks of content within or across domains that either completely match other content or are appreciably similar. Mostly, this is not deceptive in origin. Examples of non-malicious duplicate content could include:

  • Discussion forums that can generate both regular and stripped-down pages targeted at mobile devices
  • Store items shown or linked via multiple distinct URLs
  • Printer-only versions of web pages
If your site contains multiple pages with largely identical content, there are a number of ways you can indicate your preferred URL to Google. (This is called "canonicalization".) More information about canonicalization.

However, in some cases, content is deliberately duplicated across domains in an attempt to manipulate search engine rankings or win more traffic. Deceptive practices like this can result in a poor user experience, when a visitor sees substantially the same content repeated within a set of search results.

Google tries hard to index and show pages with distinct information. This filtering means, for instance, that if your site has a "regular" and "printer" version of each article, and neither of these is blocked in robots.txt or with a noindex meta tag, we'll choose one of them to list. In the rare cases in which Google perceives that duplicate content may be shown with intent to manipulate our rankings and deceive our users, we'll also make appropriate adjustments in the indexing and ranking of the sites involved. As a result, the ranking of the site may suffer, or the site might be removed entirely from the Google index, in which case it will no longer appear in search results.

So for those that cannot comprehend or choose not to what this states is that duplicate content within the same site or on different sites are at risk of being penalized.

If you want lasting ranking success, I think it's safe to say that using word for word dupes will slice your chances in half or worse. Those who say dupe content is a myth.. are they trying to find justification so thay can just copy and paste everything instead of having to make / spin content? The internet would be a very different place if it gave equal weighting to dupe content.

Google giving you some type of big penalty for posting duplicate content to multiple sites this is pretty much a myth.
This is true for the automatic operations of Google - there is no automated dupe penalty as such.

What will happen if you use word for word dupes, however, is that Google's standard operating algorithm will either prevent you from ranking, or only allow you to rank for a short duration.

If Google shows a user the same info over and over again on page 1, I know from experience as a user as well as a manipulator of Google that this is a bad user experience. This is the one thing they're trying to get away from. Why on Earth would Google let dupe content rank?

Of course. It's just common sense that using word for word duplicate content will not get you long term rankings.

With that said, like I have said over and over again, Google ranks duplicate content all the time. So if you are going for some quick hit affiliate commissions or just testing a niche product out, why the hell would you want to spend hours re-writing hundreds of articles when you don't even know if your promotion will do well?

Everyone has their own preference for how they do things. If someone wants to spend hours writing content from the get go, then I say more power to them. But for me, I personally use and get great results using duplicate content.

I don't use it always, but when I do, I'm always satisfied.

For example, I recently did a Google Trends hit.

Found a hot keyword, copied and pasted word-for-word content that was already being ranked in Google for my keyword to the blog I setup for this promotion. Then I bookmarked(yes all the exact same content on all bookmarking sites), pinged, and sat back and made over $135 for only about 1/2 hour work.

By the way, Google gave me multiple rankings for my bookmarks, as well as ranked my blog in the top 3 spots.

My final note on this subject:

Even if your duplicate content pages lose ranking in Google, you still are getting backlinks from those sites so you really have nothing to lose in my opinion.
