I began using drugs at a young age and I have had countless amazing experiences with very little or none negative effects.
Alcohol (conveniently ignored by drug-bashers) has given me wonderful nights of reckless abandon (of course I always kept my wits more or less... never one to drink and drive), grinning, laughing, dancing, flying free into the night.
Cannabis came next... oh how I loved pot! I can't tell you how much introspection and connection with myself Cannabis has catalyzed. I learned how to laugh with Cannabis. I learned how to reflect. I learned how to sit still and listen. I learned how our brains make everything banal and that the present moment and everything contained in it is beautiful.
Entheogens like LSD, Psilocybin mushr00ms (there's a wordfilter in place... don't know why), Salvia, and countless others are really amazing things. All one has to do is read some of the reports on Erowid to see that they can really open the mind, to use an old cliche. They act in mysterious ways and can bring about amazing understanding, healing, connection (with oneself or with others), and love. They should be used with respect as they are very powerful.
Every other drug I've done like cocaine or opiates were fun while they lasted but they're temporary body highs. Nothing too interesting so I don't bother with them.
Drugs are good... but they, like many things, can be misused and abused. You have to treat all drugs with respect and with an attitude of exploration, humility, lightness, and healthy fear of abuse. I have used many, many drugs, many, many times, and I find myself to be all the better for it in very significant ways. Mushr00ms, for ex., helped me with a much-needed hard shove into reflecting on my behavior.. essentially, they blew open my empathy pathways and because of them, I am the very sensitive and caring person I am today.
I should be able to control what goes into my body. Whether it be poison or vitamin, the government should have no say. When the government spreads anti-drug propaganda and restricts access to real knowledge about drugs, a taboo is created and as humans we are attracted to taboo. Prohibition doesn't work. It's not working now and it didn't work with alcohol prohibition. It creates the black market and violence. We need reliable information so when people choose to use drugs (and they always will) they can use them safely.
In reference to the posts about natural vs. unnatural drugs... well it all seems rather ridiculous to me. Consider Jimsonweed... that's one of the nastiest drugs out there, but it's natural. Don't revert to easy blanket thinking... judge each drugs on its own.
I should explain.. I believe (for the moment) that 'natural' drugs are the chemicals that have formed over the millennia and just so happen to have a real effect on our brain. Ie out of the millions of chemicals on earth, some of them are bound to affect the brain somehow, by, for ex., mimicking a neurotransmitter. In that view, natural or unnatural has no bearing.
