Hey,

I have a website for dog owners that receives about 700 - 800 unique hits a day. This summer I want to try my hand at media buying and I have seen a lot of people saying that you should drop cookies and get info about visits so that you can for the use of media buying. Would it be a good idea to collect the data from my site so that I have a list of dog owners that I can market to? Would I be able to sell someone the data collected off my site (legally).

How would the data be used in media buys, would I just have it all in a database etc.

These may be nub questions but I have not done any media buys before. any help/ links to good threads would be very helpful.

thanks in advance.

Hey mate, sure drop the cookies for your website visitors and then you are supposed to have an audience to market to that is dog owners.

I haven't figured out how to sell the data for remarketing campaigns other than this: Someone may pay you to run a campaign to your remarketing list, same as with emails. To sell this you gotta find someone interested in dog owners.

Cookies are on a end user's computer and you do not have access to the database - Google does, Sitescout does...

Start by putting a remarketing tag on your website and collecting users in your remarketing list.

Also, search for threads by Wasted. He did a great series of writeups on remarketing and big data.

It's a kind of retargeting I think. But retargeting for this amount of users does not make sense in my eyes. Trying to refind them in the WWW will be very hard.

Not really. You just sign up for a site like sitescout and put the retargeting tag on your site so you can start building an audience (=list on sitescout). Then when you want to market to them you just do a RON compaign (= all publishers) and filter on this audience so only people who have the cookie will see your ads (retargetting).

Since there are so much high level websites in sitescout the people who have your cookie will surely see your ads when they surf by.

Since you are only targetting visitors who have the cookie (your audience), if in the end nobody sees your ads (nobody has the cookie ?) you will also not pay since there are no impressions.

So yeah, just add the tag to your site, you never know if it'll make you money :p
