Dropped from #1 to #25, why?

I recently had one of my main keywords drop from #1 to the mid 20's. This site is very strong in this niche and has many keywords ranking at #1 with dozens in the top 3. This seems to be the only keyword that dropped like this. There has been little to no movement with any of the other keywords.
The page has not had any link building done recently or lost any links, no content change, or anything else that I would see causing this. The page has been in the top 5 for over a year, in the top 3 for 6 months and #1 for almost 2 months.

This major change in ranking seems like it could be algorithmic but the rest of the site is totally unaffected.

Any ideas? I plan to ride it out a while to see if returns but just seems odd.

Possibly your competitors out-ranked you with stronger SEO. Or maybe a temporary rank shift, Also possible you have faced a penalty for some wrong SEO or a competitor did negative SEO for you.

There may be many reasons, from On-page SEO to off-page SEO, from Content to references and bounce rate.

Check deeply you will surely find something. :)

I doubt it was competitors out ranking me. You don't drop that fast when out ranked. The page is still ranking on page one for other terms, so I doubt it is negative SEO. Looks like Google bounce except I made no changes on or off page.

Without more info looks like negative seo imho.

This could happen.
  1. G algorithm has a bug because the COVID pandemic makes the developer forget to update the code. :D
  2. Your competitor was working hard more than you, and the result they kick your out from the club.

It might just be temporary and the rankings will come back.

Happend to me the same but got even lower rankings on a website that ranked over 5 years on page 1 .Suddenly , ranking for many keywords dissapeared completly and for other keywords dropped to page 2 to 8 of the big G . Niche was car insurance ....i know its competitive but never did anything blackhat on it or anything ....so reason for that happening ? No freaking clue .

Seems like there is some volatility in the Google algorithms. It should regain rankings soon.

you were out-ranked, simple as that... or maybe until the rankings get refreshed

I've seen some pretty volatile serps for some of my parasites in the tech niche. One in particular went from position 4 to 77 and then back to 5. Madness

Ive got one new site that just wont stay indexed. reindex it and within 24 hours it's droped off completely again.

Guys what the hell are you talking about?
If he were outranked by someone, it would mean he'd drop from no 1. to no 2., and not to oblivion...

OP, I see several things that could happen to you in this case:
1. Google devalued certain links that you built to this particular page/KW - maybe the strongest ones, or the links got deleted
2. Google actually found some of the links or some on-page issue on this site for the particular page/KW (over-optimization, too many ads, etc) you since you didn't pass their latest filter you went down big - a penalty, but not site-wide, only for one page/KW
3. A negative SEO attack -- though this 3rd cause is highly unlikely.

Look in your google search console, don't worry, it will come back. You will see this....

April 12, 2020 onward
AMP, Mobile Usability, Speed, all rich result reports
These reports have been changed to cover a smaller number of pages, in order to provide better performance in Search Console. Because of this, you might see a decrease in the number of items and pages tracked in these reports. This change does not affect Search results, only the data reporting in Search Console.

So I did a little more research & because of COVID19 Google is being careful at the moment so no fake news gets though & also prioritizing COVID19 searches. This information is on google to find from google. It also says DO NOT CHANGE your website & keep putting out content as normal as it will all come back when this madness is over. I was worrying for 3 weeks over this but then realised most are going through the same.

Hope this helps

The keyword is still holding in the 20's. But the page ranks #1 and #2 for other keywords that are closely related. So it must be a Google glitch or algorithmic issue. I'll give it a bit of time and if it doesn't move up I'll look at some on-page changes to reduce the keyword density. It is not that dense but I have seen pages rank well with lower densities.

There is new update rolling out, called The May 2020 update. You may be hit by this update!
