all of the kind of these websites take these percentage. Fiverr also takes 20%
odesk and elance were also take this percentage before they were integrated with upwork.
I think upwork is a good choice for whom wanna to start their online career.

If I were to hire someone today I'd go to Google and search for ios developer, freelance ios devel, and so on.
Back when Upwork was Elance I think the quality was much higher. I hope Upwork gets their shit together.

Fiverr and mturk come to mind.
Depends on what you're good at.
I have 4 jobs on Upwork at the moment, busy interviewing people to fill these.
If they're any good I'll do as before and pay them direct, same as I used to do with Odesk.
At the end of the day, if I pay for a service, I expect it done correctly and on time. I'd rather not have an extra chunk to pay Upwork in commission.

My last 2 people they asked to go off upwork and just pay on PayPal. One person I had referral from a friend so I knew he was legit. The other one was new to me, but I made it clear that I would only be paying at the end and they were fine with it. I think this method ends up have both of us save quite a bit. Less hassle too and less clicks lol

Yes , I'm now advertiser and publisher same time with a traffic network ... same AM support very rude answering my questions as publisher and very polite and kind answering my questions as advertiser ..... money talks whores listen .....
Someone does really need to make a copy of upwork, but with a dedicated staff competent enough to actually resolve online disputes properly. Because let's face it, aside from basic search functionality that's 90% of the value of their platform.
The reason places like Fiverr get away with charging 20% is because those are micro transactions. Nobody really cares about $1 here or there, as long as things work.
But for serious, long term projects? Hundreds of dollars? THOUSANDS? For what?
Those percentages are basically income tax without the service and protection a REAL government seems able to provide for that kind of money.
They NEED 20%? At their scale? For 20% that better include a full release massage, as well as all transaction, dispute and service fees.

UpWork is decent, but I've been burnt several times on Freelance websites.
Either the client just says "No, that isn't what I wanted! Give me my money back!" and uses the content anyways, or they just try and play you for a complete fool.
In any case, it's still a decent site; I've made more than a few hundred dollars on there. It's just a matter of some SPECIFIC clients being pieces of garbage.

It's like starting a website and letting it run itself.. which is awful, considering it's a freelance marketplace. All you need to do is collect the money from your "Fee Bank" every month, as the owner.
Maybe that's my next big project?

Beware with this, as Upwork frowns upon this and will likely suspend your and the freelancers' account there.
I hired a VA once to do some grunt work on a few of my sites, fixing image alignments - cleaning up revisions etc. She requested to be paid outside of upwork, since she wished to avoid the fee.
Later that evening she sent me this email.
I got a warning email too. But since maybe I was spending money with them, I didn't lose my account?
Sigh!
