It took me three years to figure out I need to stop buying every damn tool released. Although the VA's help do stuff putting together their weekly tasks is a ton of work for me, so the illusion of hiring someone to do all the work is just an illusion. I never paid for anyone's plan but have been tempted by many squeeze pages. You are right these plans the guru's make are not likely to make you much money since the method is now public. If I had to live off my adsense, clickbank, and cpa money I would starve or have to eat my family. The best thing I have done was taken the knowledge I gained from IM and sold monthly SEO contracts to legit businesses. I could have easily made a living from this income but it was a ton of work. Instead of 1 boss I now had 10 and the less they paid the more they seem to demand. I ended up just keeping one client and my work from home day job.

I'm stepping out on a limb here but I would like to know how many successful IM'ers have a programming background. My guess would be there is a large % that are really good coders. I am also going to bet they have been in the business for a minimum of 5 years or they have worked for large internet based organizations. They have leveraged getting in early on things or created something much better and are now successful.

It is a cannibalistic cycle where the "successful IMers" are feeding off the noobs. If it stopped this would disrupt the whole ecosystem. Thanks for writing this up and hopefully it will save some people some grief and money. I wish I would have read this 3 years ago instead of learning this all the hard way. The crazy thing is I know all of this and I'm still here everyday, if I am anything it is persistent.

I commend you for posting this, but failure is a necessary part of IM for many people. Without failures there is no need to adapt and test. Being able to adapt and test is the only way to be long term successful in IM.

My point is that even though you're telling people it's not easy (and I agree) there will still be those looking for easy money and quitting after they fail the first time. Those people are cut out for the lottery or normal full time employment.

Very true. But at the same time, don't expect to be spoon fed. Just my 2 cents.

Asking questions is something which I recommend every to do, but asking stupid questions which are already answered for you quite clearly, and then demanding to be spoon fed is not the right way to go!

Very well said. It took me quite a while to pick a solid plan and stick to it. I used to have "shiny object syndrom" and would jump from one tool or method to the next. Honestly, I'm still branching out into several ventures that divide my time up, but I've learned how to automate and outsource many tasks in order to stay focused on what is working, and scaling it. That's the key, find something that works and stick with it, and many people are looking for "guides" and methods to make money, but when they get these methods, they think "oh, it hasn't worked and I've been doing it for a WHOLE week! Time to move to the next thing." So they get trapped in a cycle for years, when, if they had stuck with their method, they could have started producing results long ago (unless it really was just a dud method, you do have to realize after a while when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em).
