This suck brother,it happened to me too.I had 1 yahoo and 1 gmail account hacked.The thing was it happened to me live,i started geting mesages that my email got password resets as i was using my PC.Before i could change the pass to my yahoo my gmail got hacked and than the process repeated.I had a bunch of keyloggers on my pc he was seeing me changing the passwords live.Eventualy i got my yahoo mail back,but he got the gmail.I got it back like 1 week later,after i made a topic on google forums,some guy contacted people from google and they gave my my gmail account back.It obvious to see i was the owner since i didint change ip adress(samy city) since i created the account.
Like you i didint had double verification on any of them.... these were very important mails for me,i remember my hands shacking as i was quickly trying to change passwords,change email recovery adress on 2 emails at the same time

Not even sure how I would go about that and it seems like a bit too much effort to get police involved for a 45K account

Just a few tips to add:

1. Use a password manager and never use the same password for anything. I like Keepass for that but LastPass is good too.

2. Turn on trusted location/IP settings if the site allows it. Most email and social networking sites have sort of setup for this. You will receive an email any time your account is accessed from a different country or from IPs different from your usual. This way even if the account gets compromised you will become aware of it sooner and will be able to minimize damage.

I'm going to start using the password managers like you said, although the problem with the IP thing is that they probably did email me but he had already hacked that email so I didn't get notified

It happened to me almost live too. I started getting the first emails around 5 minutes before I checked but I kept getting emails the whole time about password changes

I understand. But maybe the perspective of going to jail helps convince them to return the accounts.

Well you're right, but your account got stolen and ....the guys who deal with stolen accounts are the police. That's the rationale. It's unauthorized access, which is typified as a crime in the USA.

I dont see the point of other people trying hacking so hard individuals accounts just because they want it. It just going to last for some time but then he will realize, what is the point to have that account, he wont appreciate it. Usually if you work hard for something and you want it so bad you will appreciate more because you will know from A to Z how that account works and it will be way more fun to use it as compare as someone to steal it and dont know what to do with it. Those people have nothing better to do in their life, hope you're better by now and get it back somehow.

Yeah, they are pretty reasonable about these things. I lost control of mine once (not hacked) and they had me email a picture of myself with a code written on a piece of paper.

Identity theft is a goldmine. They gain access to your accounts and market to your connections. They can pretend to be you and gain trusted information from your friends and family. They have easier access to your financial data and can siphon money from your accounts. They can sell each account of yours that they crack into and let someone else take those risks.

Yes I know they can do this but I still dont think this is cool. If you want it so bad, you have to work hard and then you can enjoy and you will appreciate more, I think as if the work that you done was coming from you not because somebody stole the information of somebody.

I know, I have worked on this account for like 2 years and it was my favourite account I've made. I don't think the person will appreciate it

Unfortunately I can't do this because it wasn't a personal account so I had no pictures of me on it that they can verify with.
