You can target as many you want. Instead of targeting 10 high competition keywords, I would prefer to target 20 low competition LSI keywords initially.
Just you have to plan strategies for each of the keywords.
Create a customized page for each targeting keywords. Fast ranking requires a lot of quality backlinks.

I would suggest u to work on lsi keywords initially and gradually try to work on average competitive keywords.
