The problem is not in the speed itself, the problem is that a slow website will increase your bounce rate and shorten session duration which will always hurt your ranking.

It's about User Experience, so yes: If your site is slow, your visitors will quickly drop.

Slow website usually means there's more to it, and all of these are categorized ubfer Core Web Vitals. If your core web vitals are poor your rankings could be impacted negatively.

More than any SEO impact, you need to worry about conversion impact.

As a user...What would YOU do if you click on a SERP result and the page takes 5 or 6 seconds to load?
If there's a constant in every single Google core update in the past 10 years is that they have invested millions of dollars in making us focus on offering the best possible user experience for their users and, therefore, page speed is a vital part of that process.
Hence, the Core Web Vitals update.
