We all know that using duplicate content is like signing a death warrant to your website, but what about images? If they are renamed, can they be used with no penalty?

I know there are apps out here that can reverse image search, so G must be able to do the same.

What is your opinion on this?

Regards,

James :)

Search engine robots can only read the tags that go with the picture but they do not have eyes to see the picture so you will not receive any penalties

Images are fine, otherwise the Stock photograph/image sites would go out of business.
I think if you are using proper tags then it will be fine.

Cheers :)

You're in London right? Did you just hear a massive explosion?

Thanks guys, well put, but how does this work if images can't be read?

That site is crap, just tried it. If I were you I wouldn't worry about the duplicate image thing at all. However if you're still not sure about it then just change the name of the image, crop it or resize it and you're good to go.

Lol you East, South?

Logically there should be no penalty because images and texts do not necessarily serve the same purpose when it comes to providing information to visitors (unless of course if you have an image-only site).

I always suspect it might because Matt C says it doesn't.

But seriously it would be a hard call - if two people took a pic of the same landmark for their travel sites it would be pretty similar so how could they penalise it, but it wouldnt surprise me if they rolled out something stupid like this in the future

West London. Only go East when I want to see the Strippers in Shoreditch and I always try to avoid going South of the River, lol.

I'm in Ruislip, how didn't you hear that?

Agreed on S London lol

I think it is. I am from E London, not been here long.

Don't tell me you live on Copley Close lol

If you're worried about it then just strip the metadata. I use gimp and open the image, copy it then paste it in a new image window and change the name. I did do this for all of my images but it got really time consuming. I think there are programs out there that do it for you though in bulk. I've never tried it though.
