Does Hosting Location Matter?

I currently have 20 sites with 1&1 who are rubbish but it is their basic shared hosting plan so what did I expect. My sites are all aimed at UK market. Does location of server matter for SEO/site speed?

Who would you recommend for shared hosting (20-50 sites) that is cheap but better than 1&1? Any VPS provider recommendations? Guessing for VPS I would need CPanel or such license? Or do they come with that as standard?

Sorry for all the questions.

Speed is important yes, and that goes hand in hand with location. Generally, YES you do want to target a location based on where your traffic is. At the same point, if you have a CDN this can help with the a majority of that.
 
In short, not so much nowadays. Look at it this way. You get ~200ms of advantage to your UK client vs let's say USA premium location. And if you have site that loads for 5 seconds in UK hosting, and that same site loads in 3 seconds from USA location, those 200ms are pointless to look at. :)

So, basically, I can host anywhere and use a CDN like cloudflare free and my site speed for UK market should be good?

So what is the SEO benefit of using a CDN like the free plan from Cloudshare?

Sites that perform fast will generally rank higher. If your site is slow, your rankings can drop. The general idea would be that using a CDN would speed up the loading for visitors around the world and that increase in performance would become noticed in Google and thus, you may rank higher.

Thanks. I might test it with one of my sites which is still green to see if it makes much of a difference to both the speed and SERP.
 
Now days the location really is not much of a factor. What is a factor is the connection. You could have two providers in the same building but one has a better network set up and will have better connections than the other.

Best thing to do is do a little testing and find you has the best connection for your target market.
 
if you are targeting visitors from some specific country then it is good to buy hosting or vps from same country, this will result in faster loading of website for that specific country. However this doesn't have any effect on local seo e,t,c
 
Helpful if your site is hosted on SSD and lite speed web servers.

If you are hosting wordpress sites, then host that specializes in wordpress hosting is preferable.
 
I used 1&1 in past, Don't have a good experience and even you can see their reviews.

Speed is important but its depend on overselling. VPS can give you good speed.

Free cloudflare is rubbish!! When I tested them my first byte dropped drastically.

And I see many people say location doesn't matter, bs, without a good CDN location DOES matter.

This is nothing more than a marketing trick. Before I knew anything about VPS I fell for that once with inmotion, I don't recommend it, overpaying and most of the time they drop you on the same shared server as the rest.
VPS is the way.
I host 10 WP sites on my VPS which costs me only $10,- a month.
 
Nope, it doesn't matter

Try Crocweb.com : Cheap, Very Fast and never any issues with them
