Does Building Backlinks Increase Rankings?

ScrapeBoss, nice job with the levels description. A neat trick for giving this some "kick" and adding another decent level between #'s 1 & 2 in your description that really doesn't require any additional work at all would be to:

Have "Your Money Site", then build a Squidoo Lens/Hub Page/ etc., now, instead of just backlinking the Lens/Hub/etc. grab its RSS feed and ping through a service like Pingler or PingCaster (any ping service that has a directory attached to it), because these create profile pages in the directory from the sites you ping, so now you've got a profile page on Pingler that links to your Lens/Hub, you've just blasted your Lens/Hub RSS feed to aggregators, and your Lens/Hub links to your money site.

See, it's an additional layer added in just by pinging with the right services that have directories attached to them and give site profile pages.

Now, use your mass-backlinking tactics on either or both of the ping profile pages and/or the Lens/Hub type pages.

I always look for easy ways to get things done, or combine my efforts, and since I'm going to ping the RSS feed of everything I create anyway, might as well do it where I get an additional free backlink on a site profile page that I can hammer with mass-cheapo-links without any concerns.

Yes, then you do backlinks to the backlinks to the backlinks to your site. Thenk you make backlinks to the backlinks to the backlinks to the backlinks to your site. Then you bookmark the sites. Then you submit the rss feeds to rss aggregators for those sites. Then you bookmark the rss feeds to those sites. Then you post on forums to these sites. Then you comment on blogs to these sites!

Thats the name of the game in linkbuilding.. actually, its sort of a numbers game! :laughing:
 
You only need linkwheels if the sites you link from are your sites. Don't waste time on this, rather get links from authority sites and dont worry about any link wheel messes.

According to Search Engine guru Jerry West, G recently refined/changed their algo. Links for the sake of building links wont be as helpful as before October... instead it has to be RELEVANT links versus spam links or even paid links:

"Google just did a major shift and they are counting links in the content higher than ever. So, that means that the paid links are counting less in terms of the anchor text push."

Keith Baxter continues... "make sure the context of the article matches your topic and link from keywords that compliment your site.
Profile links are counting less.
Forum links are counting less.
Directory links are counting less.
Blog comments are counting less.
Notice I said, 'counting less' and not worthless. Big difference"
 
I've done a link wheel with just free web 2.0 sites and it worked pretty effectively...of course it'll depend on the competition that you're going after but good SEO requires a lot of work if its tough competition.

The anchor text in this example isn't as important as the backlink itself. However, I'm not saying it's not a good idea. Best practice is to have the backlink to the backlink be a contextual link for a keyword you don't need to be ranking for, but still relevant to your 'holy grail' keyword.
 
its much more complicated than simply acquiring backlinks. your first step is to read everything you can about seo. Simply asking one question is not going to give you a short cut.

That depends on the competition that you are trying to outrank. I do the following when getting a site to rank:

From seeing previous link wheel diagrams, I'd say that the circles represent a Web 2.0 property like Tumblr or Livejournal where you can submit an article .

The rectangles are profile links, comment backlinks, and bookmarking sites. A kind of spammy backlink pointing to a web 2.0 property.
 
The circles (Hubs) are Web 2.0 properties with only one outbound link to the money site. The rectangle boxes (feeder sites) are article sites and Web 2.0 properties and once the structure is built, you submit the sites to social bookmarking sites suing spun titles, you ping all the sites and submit the RSS feeds.

The process gives the hubs a stronger link which pushes your site up in the serps.

Never ever.

That creates a footprint as well as diminishing the power of the outbound links.

One outbound link per property is really the only way to go.

Back when I first came up with the process I did it all manually. Now it is all automated. All I do is input the keywords I want to target, add my url and click a button and the linkpush is generated.
 
Guys seriously , ever heard about Senuke , EVO II ? It does it all for you with a push of a button :)
