Blog comments are really not an effective SEO method so maybe read a tad more in the forum to get some better ideas.

https://developers.google.com/search/docs/beginner/how-search-worksObv. Google does not know when a link is paid i.e. guest post so that is typical Google bs, but I think it's likely true they do not follow comments to crawl

I'm assuming that you are talking about website blog/new page of your website.
Blog commenting is still have some potential to help you in Link indexing. I have tested it but the Blog commenting primarily works on High DA websites only (E.g. Backlinko, Neil Patel, Content Marketing Institute, etc.).
However, there is another effective way to index your Link without creating external links.
Yes, that's via internal linking.
Add your newly created link in the existing and high authority webpage. Check next day and enjoy!

If it's only to index links, then do-follow comment backlinks work great. But you need to keep in mind that Google has higher crawl budget for some sites over others. So, you need to find specific sites by trial and error to improve your indexing. You can also use tools like GSA SER for blog comments and forum posts.

You cash do blog comments with gsa and scrapebox but u need alot of live links with your URL in order to index faster
