Used it for like 3 months, thought it was a massive waste of time/money.
IMO it's only worth it for a large brand/website, like if you're at 1,000+ UV per day or something like that.
I just couldn't utilize the data/analytics that effectively, when GA is enough for me currently.

moz is authentic, useful and a great tool for SEO.So far i know google uses moz's statistics for ranking purpose.

Moz offers quite good set of tools and they have very big community - plenty of basic to mid-level SEO knowledge there. I agree, that their backlink explorer is bit outdated. If you're mostly after backlinks stick to Ahrefs or MajesticSEO and you'll be fine. You could try Moz anyways, as their free trial is quite a long one.
There's plenty of alternatives if you're tight on budget. If you care about rankings you could check out Serpbook or SerpFox. You also might be interested in tool from my sig as well.

I used Moz several months ago for expired domains, but it the results were pants compared to Ahrefs.

For backlinks and stuff I believe Ahrefs is the best.

i forget which blog / forum was running the promo but i know it is still active, however it was for 9mos of moz for free - an insane offer right? im on month 2 of my free trial , i love it, but honestly im not seeing why it is so expensive, i doubt ill renew as paid member once trial is over

For backlink analysis it's junk! Try Majestic or Ahrefs.
I'm using Moz Pro trial in 120 days. And I think it's good for learning SEO, good for choose keywords and good for manage your campaigns.
I like to use 4 tools:
- Opensite explorer - checks backlinks
- Rank tracker - checks rank your site with your keywords
- Keyword Analysis - checks keywords difficulty, it helps you to decide that you should choose a keyword or no
- Onpage Grader - checks and marks your pages the from the A score to the F score for optimize search engine with your selected keyword and the reason that you get the A or F score.
