I am definitely doing more of this lately - using Spyglass to check out other sites' backlinks. Not necessarily competitors', any site I see has been SEOd to death
There are some real low OBL gems around! I think this is an important strategy - it's quality over quantity and can get results better than any automated blasting, and for less effort really... You can also just search Google using SEOQuake for random keywords and see if any high-prs come up. If they are relevant keywords then all the better, but better to try different, less saturated ones.
I wonder what people feel about using anchor links though - I don't always feel comfortable using them, and feel they often wouldn't get approved, but wonder if it's still worth it. Haven't tested, but I keep doing them for now as it seems to get results anyway. But they might be superfluous...
