Wow i didn't know you could get an island for so cheap. I really have something to work towards for the next couple of years....50k in a couple years to blow on an island is definitely doable.

It was appraised at $150k, but I highly doubt I can get that in today's recession market. My parents' lot with the house was appraised at over 1mil while they only invested maybe $400k. I'm thinking this summer I'll spend there to throw up a cheap little house (doing all the labor myself and shit) and I should be able to flip it for at least a few hundred grand once this recession lightens up. I dunno.
PS: If this is making me sound like some pimp motherfucker, I'm not. Money is tight right now.

Yes, but don't forget about potential problems as I previously mentioned. So you will need to find a way to get fresh water to the island if they don't have it already and also electricity which can be powered with the generators.
Nevertheless, probably the most important issue is the building itself. Do you even have a slight understanding of what it takes to build a house on an island?
For instance, 2 years ago I purchased a property in New Mexico at 9,000 feet, ski in and ski out. Well the problem was that they had to build the house on a site in Albuquerque and then transport it in 2 pieces on a truck. Yes 2 pieces. They simply weren't able to build it up there. Well this little adventure cost me just a little over half a million dollars. I could have had the same thing done for $150,000-$200,000 if it wasn't up on the mountain. Just imagine what kind of trouble you will have to run into when you build something on an island that hasn't been touched before and is out of the way. You might even need to fly down architects and construction workers from another state since there aren't any near the island.
So your little island of $100,000 could end up being over a million dollar project.

yeah, premium you beat me to it. i researched this years ago and the "unadvertised" start-up and ongoing costs slapped me in the face. if you want a place to go to every once in a while and live like the people on "lost" for a long weekend, and head back to your life then check it out. but there is a reason some places are a few mill and others are 50k and it aint just location, location, location...

Assuming the weather is somewhat mild (no 6 feet snow hills in winter, relatively few and weak hurricanes, preferably no tsunamis), a 2-storey wooden house, properly insulated and reinforced could be built for sums that are below seven digits in lenght.
I remember when I explained the concept of micronations to my friend a few months ago (I think it was on January). He loved it.
Now, hypothetically, if someone here had an island that was outside of teritorial waters and belonged to no country, how could we go about getting recognition for the Meritocracy of BlackHatWorld?

The thing people don't realize about owning an island is having to maintain the infrastructure. You have to keep the dock or airstrips maintained. You have to travel to get what you need, by boat or air. It is expensive to get and more so to just maintain. Make sure you have the money to do all this .

personally, when rent is so cheap on many of the islands as it is, and women are abundant in supply...why commit? You can get a furnished 2 bed in barbados for $350/mo. for example.
