Do you think SEO got easier over the last 10 years?
The days of spun article submissions and directories are gone but there are plenty of opportunities to build links for free.
The great thing is that there's less competition now and I, personally, find it easier to rank now than like 5 years ago (yes, you need an aged site). Lots of good content (manually written and researched) + decent links will do the job. So many abandoned sites now so it's easy to outrank them.
What's your take?

PS: people who say SEO is expensive are full of shit... they just want to sell you links. Plenty of websites/blogs where you can post for free (OK, you need to provide content).

I voted NO, because 10 years ago I ranked 3 websites with 20 PLR articles each and by submitting a few articles to EzineArticles. You can't do this nowadays because google is our lord and savior and if google tells us that article directories and link exchange are garbage we should brainlessly hate on article directories and link exchange.

So, no, it didn't get easier

No it is impossible now.
Why would you say it?

Yes, but if you have decent content and some free links... you'll rank... my personal opinion.

Nothing good available for free now.
you yourself accept that we need content, and thats the thing sucks most money now days on seo.

It may look is to you because you do seo for yourself with limited niche from long time, and your main competitor abandon there sites but you are still working on them.
but overall, its hard then 2010-12 days. where we can rank with just directory links.

Yet when you are competing with sites who have just as good content are investing in links, then you'll not outrank them.
Free links are good for helping new sites get out of the so called Sandbox and might work for zero volume search terms, but you will never rank for anything serious with free links and content.

Yes, I find it hard and expensive to find good content writers. The last time I used a good content writer it cost me $0.08 per word, thus $80 for 1k words article. And I can't write myself.

Disagree here... there are plenty of great links for free. Example: I have links from benzinga for free (OK, I paid for content), even though some sellers charge over $200. I also get guest posts for free... why? because those who sell guest posts look like link farms.

Those who have updated themselves, it is easy for them.

I won't say it's hard, it is more competitive. If you know where to spend your $$ to get rank in SERP then it is easy.

I prefer today's difficulty of SEO because if it's easy, everyone would do it and claim to be SEO expert.

I prefer SEO to stay this way. Its harder but the barrier of entry is also higher.

Thank you... that's exactly my point.

Donno, I didn't knew about backlinks 5 years ago.
but the issue I face is some link-building tools don't work or are harder to work with.
This is another thing I need to get good at, finding expired domains.
But I casting a yes vote, because of your optimism.

Yes. Easier by far.

There is almost no challenge in it anymore, and it scares me to think that one day, it'll tighten up and become difficult, so I can no longer do it.

"Back in the day" you would just spam the keyword on-site, go off and spam a bunch of comments, social media posts (the only thing that was easier back then was Facebook), and it was boring. It was a game of "who could spam the most" whilst being passable enough to keep the visitor on the page. It was low.
The game got better and more interesting, but it's pretty bland now.
