Do you think its rude when people ask how much you make?

The moment anyone asks me about income I simply avoid the answer. I have been called out numerous times for being a "bum" not going to work, etc. I have been asked to provide proof of payment by a lot of people. Some of which saw my business at a glance and nearly died, they always thought it was too much work for one focused minded smart man to do on his own. Others got really friendly with me and asked to either get a loan or get free hand outs. I don't keep many friends as my mood and behavior dictate that I don't get to just hang out and chill when I want to as work comes first.

I don't have a flush stack of bills in my pocket, rather at the end of a 3 month period I can drop some money on a new idea while keeping my old assets fully maintained. What does that mean? I pay my bills and invest a sizable amount in new ideas for my clients, or for my media plans.

I really think it depends on the timing of the question, the person etc. I personally wouldn't mind whether someone asked or not, because I don't really care if they know. That doesn't change my ability to make money or be happy with what I've earned does it? However I wouldn't ask another individual because they might or might not share my views on the subject / might get offended if I make more etc.

Yes, many people feel uncomfortable when being asked that question. Don't ask that question directly. Just ask something like:

"How's work man? You making some good money? They pay you well?"

Instead of:

"How much are you making?"

Most of the time they will tell you exactly how much they make. And of course there are people who like to stay private and they'll say: "Yeah, everything's good.".

I think transparency and honesty is good. I don't see any reason why you should hide income or estates in a society.
It would be better if we would actually know how much everybody earns, so we could distribute it fairer. Because some people earn nothing from an important activity they do and some earning a fortune although they don't contribute to society at all.

What's your point? That the people who earn more should feel bad because other don't?

I get more annoyed than anything else since we all know that they're usually either trying to turn it into a "My dick is bigger" conversation or they want you to help them start the exact same business you run.

I do think its very circumstantial, but typically it's off base to ask about income in my opinion. There is very little correlation between what a man is worth and how much money is in his bank account. People ask about wealth it is for envy, or it is literally their measure of a person. They can want to drain your resources, or use your shortcomings to raise themselves up.

There are a lot of measures of wealth, but people rarely ask me about the family. :)

I don't mind if they ask, however I usually don't tell them.

I don't think it is rude, I just don't like talking about it.

EDIT: As someone else here said, it kind of comes part-in-parcel with the IM business. People are curious because they just want to know if it really works or not. Sure, its not particularly polite, but I do think that most people who ask have good intentions. I'm very rarely asked that question directly though and I NEVER ask that question directly unless the person is a good friend of mine and we're discussing that topic specifically.

It all depends on the relationship between the two. Certainly rude if those are hardly acquainted. But considering the IM my point of view is that as soon as someone is sharing his story of success he should be expecting such a question. And in such case it does not appear rude to me to ask about income.

I live in 250$ per month average payjob country, and I make way more than that in one day.

I'm not a di*k with my earnings, because I know how people would fell if I tell them that I make their month earnings in few hours.

I talk about this with my business friends, and my parents.

We live in same country.

I told all my family and friends that I earn average payment of 250€.

No, but I usually don't answer these questions.

I actually just don't know if I can fathom what it is like to live in a country where $250/month is average.

I'm willing to talk about what I make with almost everyone who is interested. IMO it's wrong to not talk about money. You can learn so many things about money that it would be stupid to not talk about it. Of course, it still depends on the situation and your status. For example, you shouldn't ask people at your work about how much they make if you don't know them really really well. But in terms of entrepreneurship you should use every opportunity you get.
