I just launched my own web design and SEO agency, and I'm currently designing sites for clients.

I have licenses for both Astra Pro and GeneratePress Premium. I'm wondering if these are still considered the top WordPress themes or if there's a better option I should be using.

I've heard some people recommend Elementor, but I'm concerned about it being bulky and slowing down sites.

What are your thoughts and recommendations?

Yes, I think Astra & GeneratePress are still among the top WordPress themes in 2025 especially if you care about performance + flexibility. If speed / clean code is priority, I lean toward GeneratePress; if you want faster design (starter sites, strong WooCommerce + LMS integration), Astra gives more ready-to-use options. It really depends on your site type and what you need.

Ok i will check

Both of them are enough. If you're exploring more options, try Kadence.

If you are asking in terms of speed and flexibility i will also include a few others like kadence theme and block page builders like kadence and greenshift. Also if you need even more light weight then check out live canvas. Its a pure html css builder for wordpress with picostrap theme.

Hey cool that you’re thinking critically about this. Astra Pro & Generate Press Premium are both excellent themes, especially for agencies. They both tick a lot of boxes: speed, flexibility, community support, and solid SEO foundations. But whether there’s a better option depends on how you work, what you value most (speed vs design flexibility vs ease of use), and what kind of clients/sites you're doing.

Astra was build for elementor pagebuilder then they tried to build their own page builder called Spectra which is a massive flop.
In short if you are using astra for anything other than blogging you need a page builder and that's elementor pro(elementor free is shit).

Generate press has its own page builder that works and has no dependency on third party like astra does.

In the long run these two are still a better choice compared to the themes that come and go. These 2 have the projects running for long time and the authors are not seems to be abandoning their project.

I have license code for astra pro plugin and spectra plugin .. But auto update is not available for my astra pro and spectra pro... It was enabled few months ago

Hey great question. As someone running a web design / SEO agency, picking the right theme / setup is a big lever: affects speed, maintainability, flexibility, SEO, and your dev time. Astra Pro and GeneratePress Premium are still very solid choices in 2025 but “top” depends on what tradeoffs you’re willing to accept. I’ll compare what you have, what alternatives are strong now, pros/cons (especially about speed / bloat), and what I’d recommend if it were me. If you want, I can also suggest some stack suggestions.

yeah, they’re still solid picks for speed and long term stability.
elementor can work, but it’s easy to bloat sites if you’re not careful

astra is one of the best i am using since 3 year almost on all site

Elementor works too but can add extra weight if you stack a lot of widgets. You can add a builder only on parts that need it instead of site wide.

Still solid choices. Astra and GeneratePress are lightweight, fast, and flexible great for clients. Elementor’s fine for design but can bloat. Unless you need something very niche, stick with them.

Both are still top-tier choices for performance. If you want speed, stick with GeneratePress or Astra. Elementor is fine for design flexibility, but it does add bloat. Also, take a look at Kadence if you haven't yet, it's a solid competitor right now.

Personally, I use Elementor for most projects. To avoid using so many unnecessary addons, I try to write my own custom CSS and Javascript for specific designs I have in mind. I find that this helps me reduce the latency, and maintain website speed.
