Lot of threads here are about Facebook likes. And we know the reach of fan pages is just a few percentage and will go even lower over time. Is it really worth the effort to get more likes compared to other traffic source?

No, the likes just temporarily make us feel like we're loved.

There are actually some tools, such as the Moz Toolbar and Alexa, which use Facebook likes and other social signals to determine a website's popularity, worth, and potential. Not only that, the likes also make the Facebook page appear genuine when they are properly combined with shares and comments.

Definitely! Social signals + when someone likes your page you can update them every so often.
I will say that shares are more important. ;)

Google (Matt Cutts blog) has made it very clearly Google doesn't use social signal for ranking web pages even though there's a correlation between good ranking and popularity on social media.

    So it's for cosmetic reason.

In some cases, yes! Although those "cosmetic social signals" can often translate into real money if you do it right.

The well-ranked webpages often have strong social signals, but the web pages with strong social signals may not rank well if those signals failed to generate quality backlinks. Does it make sense?

I see what you're saying. Obviously something that is popular on one media channel is more likely to be popular on another. I don't think that automatically means a direct correlation though. I would also not discard the idea. Perhaps it has more to do with how the likes are gained and how they are used once obtained.

I think traffic from search engines (Google) converts 4-5% better than that of facebook traffic. But at the same time it depends on the type of campaign you are running.

Like if you able to introduce various market favorable deals frequently than they will convert a lot better on facebook, if you engage the right (targeted) traffic. :)

Your Social Media Management Should be Equilent to your Search Engine Optimization

If you have Followers on Twitter and Pinterest Likes on your Pages Members in FB Groups and connections on Linkedin then surely they convert into regular traffic and traffic = sales

According to Google (Matt Cutts), they analyze over 200+ factors to rank a website & i strongly believe if Social Signals are used in a proper manner then they can drive relevant traffic.

Popularity on social media symbolizes legitimacy & authority as people are only willing to like & follow our site IFF they really like our site. So, in my opinion popularity on social media is a healthy factor for traffic engagement as well as for rankings.

Yes, social media metrics are very important.

+ Everytime someone likes and shares an article in a legit manner, it creates a backlink in facebook and a lot of them can be found in google. Though it's all from one source, that's a lot of backlink juice right there.

Backlinks from social media don't help much for SEO because there's no editorial control and everyone can create as many link as they like. The traffic is valuable of course.

That's not entirely true as this depends on what type of business you are running. A B2B company is more likely to be popular on Google+ and Linkedin while a B2C company is more likely to be popular on Facebook.

You're right, though. It isn't a direct correlation since the results vary between businesses.

You can get higher engagement than what most people claim if you actually learn how to properly build and run a Facebook page. I have a page that averages 15-20% engagement and sends as much traffic as some pages with over a million fans and its a quarter the size. It's all about shareable content.
