Why/Why not...

personally, i think the whole whois law completely stupid....my domain registrar doesn't provide whois protection.....soi tend to fake mine by entering stuff from fng + email from a catch all domain

so far, i haven't gotten angry emails from my registrar....but then i don't cybersquat or do anything 'illegal' with my domains either....

has anybody gotten arrested for fake whois data?

even if I have free whois privancy from my registrar I`ve created a username under my reseller account with fake infos :) I`m too paranoid sometime I know but .. I`m feel safe anyway I don't have million dollars worth sites which can make anyone to check them :)
 
Namecheap has free whois privacy, so I dont fake anything, but I dont have really any copyright infringment on anything like that on my sites either...
 
Yes.. I fake it.. based upon the site...... also it keeps people out of your niches. But I do add a real contact email... sometimes people email ya offering to buy ur site or domain.

I always fake my info if I can and always use privacy. What's the point of leaving your info on the internet for any wacko to check them out at a simple whois command?

It's absolutely beyond me why anybody would want to reveal him real info.

For all the "fakers" out there, I share a "REAL" horror story (pun intended).

I had tons of domains with goDaddy under one account and all fake info. Someone broke into the account and xferred them out. I had a VERY HARD TIME and a lot of begging to prove I am the owner. I got them all back except for one after a week of trying.

The moral of the story:
a) use it for "throw-away" domains
b) spread your domains across multiple accounts on registrars just in case one of the accounts is hacked into.

Before I forget, anyone can challenge your ownership of a domain, by telling registrar that the ownership is fake... so see a, b, c again :)

I have a better solution for you:

DONT use GoDaddy at all. They are pure crap.
 
domain privacy does NOT work. There is already one free site out that lists the info details. My guess they harvest before the privacy is ever put on the domain
I am thinking they first have to register the domain and then activate the privacy...giving time to fish the details out.
 
if your site is not scamming people, you don't need to fake your whois data. :)
 
man i fake it all the time, wh give them my info anyways.

but go daddy confiscated a domain from me, wanted me to send them a scan copy of my id to prove my info is correct. ******** that i sent them a email that said ******** that. and kept it moving. since then i never used go daddy.
 
sometimes u gotta fake it lol but ive heard of doms getting pulled due to having fake info.

I disagree. Why put yourself out there for the whole Internet to see? Just use namecheap and keep everything private so you don't have to worry about anything.
 
Even if you register privately your info can still be accessed by some people (i.e. Google, The FBI, The CIA).
lol I'm not really sure about the FBI, CIA spiel but I know that your info is never TOTALLY private.

Sometimes I fake some parts of my registrar info, I look at it as asset protection.
