Do you check a site’s outbound links before placing a guest post?

Something I started paying more attention to recently while doing guest post placements.

Before placing a link, I usually check the outbound links on that site. Sometimes a blog looks decent at first, good DR, some traffic, but once you look closer, it’s linking out to every niche possible: crypto, casino, CBD, finance, tech… all on the same site.

At that point it starts feeling a bit risky.

Now I try to check the site’s linking pattern before placing anything, not just the metrics.

Curious how others handle this.

Do you mainly look at DR/traffic, or do you also check where the site is linking out before placing a guest post?

Absolutely! Checking outbound link patterns is a must. If a site is linking to casino, crypto, and pharmacy all at once, it's a huge red flag for me. I call these link farms. I always prioritize sites with a clean and niche-relevant outbound profile over high DR sites that link to everyone.

Checking outbound links can also help, in addition to DR and traffic. This is because sites with mixed or unrelated niches may have lower overall quality. Looking at topical consistency and linking patterns gives a more balanced view before placing guest posts

100% always check their outbound links.

It's a good way to see if their link farming and if the topical authority is right for your domain.

Yeah , that is a good catch. High DR and traffic can look nice , but if a site is linking out to random niches like casino or crypto , it feels a bit spammy . I usually take a quick look at their outbound links too now , just to be safe. A more focused site just feels like a better bet overall.

Yes, outbound link profile is just as important as DR/traffic if a site is linking out to every niche randomly, it usually signals it’s a PBN or link farm.
I personally check relevance + consistency of outbound links first, then only look at metrics as a secondary filter.
