Do you build links based on keywords or topical clusters?

Lately, I’ve been shifting from keyword based link building to a more topic focused approach. Instead of chasing one term, I build around clusters and supporting content. It’s giving me stronger relevance signals and better results long term. Do you still target individual keywords or build links with topical authority in mind?

If you're building the right links, and diversifying the anchors properly, pointing links to money pages directly would be more effective,
Everything surely depends on the overall SEO plan for the website, "clusters" importance, which pages are meant to rank, volumes, etc...

Yeah, I agree with you, Linking directly to money pages with the right anchors definitely works well when it fits into the overall SEO plan.
Lately, I have just been leaning into clusters more to support those main pages. It’s been helping with topical relevance and overall stability, especially in tougher niches. Have you noticed any difference long term between straight to money page links vs. more cluster driven strategies?

Focusing on tropical cluster is a great move. It helps build stronger, more relevant authority over time. I’m definitely more about building links with topical authority in mind now. It’s a more practical strategy.

Topical authority just feels like a more sustainable strategy, especially with how search intent and algorithms are evolving. Are there any particular approaches or tools you’re using to plan your clusters?

Are you getting better rankings for the supporting pages or money pages by doing this?
It's probably something to do with your internal linking,

Linking directly to the money pages will get them more link juice for sure,
Mixed with internal links to the "supporting pages" will make them rank in most cases,
All depends on the website's overall authority & the pages KWs competition,

Of course, it's not one size fits all, but a rule of thumb that if you want a page to rank, linking directly to it would get it more authority,
You don't need much diversity for the pages you're linking to, you can get most of the link pointing to a few pages without a problem,
Assuming you're built enough percentage already pointing to the homepage, and properly internal linking to all of the other pages,
Then, if that's not enough to rank one of the clusters, you can build some more links when it's needed

I focus on topical clusters now building links around related content boosts relevance and long-term rankings better than targeting single keywords.

I think you're looking in the wrong direction. Backlinks should be placed on relevant pages, ideally on websites whose domains are also related to your niche. That's the key.

I usually build links around topical clusters since it strengthens overall authority, then tie in keywords naturally.
