Do you believe in luck?

haha great perspectives guys. im glad a lot of you share the same point of view as me.
i had a discussion with someone that was saying that people who made it big need luck. i told him that it was hard work and skill acquired etc. he said that even with all that they had help and skill and no one makes it on their own without luck. i just agreed with him to end the conversation cause i knew i wouldnt be able to get him to understand.
oh well, people like him open up opportunities for those of us who are willing to get creative and work hard outside the norms of using a degree and working for "someone" as the only source of income.

It's all a numbers game - do enough good things and good things will happen to you. Of course luck is a factor, but the impact of luck is often overplayed. A "lucky" entrepreneur may hit the jackpot in 1500 tries (random number) while an unlucky person might need 4000 tries, but the same result is achieved. Meanwhile, a 9-5 couch potato will never get lucky because they never even take a chance.

Of course luck (circumstances) play a very big part in determining the destiny of a person.
e.g. We are lucky that we weren't born in Somalia or any other war-torn country.
e.g. We are lucky that we weren't born blind or severely handicapped.
e.g. We are lucky that we had access to basic education.
Where would we all be if these were not true?

You don't need luck to "make it big", but luck does exist.
For instance: I can't count the number of web design companies that made it because of one big client.

I honestly believe that we will never know. It is either luck and happenstance OR all of those 'lucky' things were supposed to happen the way they did/do....OR a mixture of both. I used to think that every single thing happens for a reason and that you literally can make your luck. However, like the news story on yahoo that I just read ---> this couple was walking/hiking behind their house that they have lived in for years and noticed a metal can on it's side sticking out of the ground below a little moss....it turned out to be over 10 million dollars in gold cache coins just sitting there right under the ground from the 1800's. That always makes me and probably everyone else think 'what are the odds?' 'why can't I find 10 million dollars popping out of my backyard' 'wtf'! I think there is no way to know if it was just luck or if it was supposed to happen.
I would have to say that I think it is both, luck happens and at the same time, our thoughts, intentions and actions may in fact produce some kind of result either immediately or down the line, but who knows? Wish I did! :smoker:

I prefer the term "chance".
I believe that there is such a thing. I also believe that you can manipulate it to your benefit to a certain degree (as well as make it less favourable) by taking certain actions or by being in the right environment.
Many people like to blame their failure on luck. But many others also hate to admit (or see) that there is a lot of things that are simply out of our control.
Someone above said: "No I find luck as an insult to hard work and planned success."
I see it this way: You can plan all the success you want and work as hard as you possibly can...and then just die in a car crash (or tsunami, or plane crash, or disease, etc.).
Chance is a real thing IMHO. You can improve it, but almost never to 1.0 (or 100%).
