Genuine short Article can stay but Rewritten or spinned list of short or long articles can blow your site far away from google pages. So you can be precise and short but never use article spinners on your own site.

Short articles can rank.
Look at Tumblr blogs that are ranking. There are just pictures and a few 5-10 words each post

Nope, I don't think that small article hurt but the most valuable thing is need to be clean, error free and unique.

Never, short articles never hurt the site or visitors because there are all sizes of articles available on the sites.
