they do to some extent but not by a remarkable scale. they won't help that much in ranking unless the keyword is extremely rare! it's always better to go for seo link building. hope you got the point.
I think profile links add some credibility and make your overall footprint more "believable" but having 2000 of them wont help and might look spammy. being listed on the most relevant business directories and a few social media sites, if active a few times a month makes your listing look more real to Google.
