Does anyone here design their own banner ads for fb campaigns? If so what tools do you use?

low budget members will do , but if you can afford a designer it will be better

You can use Canva, photoshop, illustrator. You should follow facebook ad creative rules and create ad posters then it will work.

I might have to try Canva, because I keep seeing it mentioned elsewhere. How is it’s ease of use? I wish I had better graphic abilities because I have the vision in my head of what I want but can never get it to look the way I want because I don’t want to take the time to learn another tool.

You can always check Fiverr for the same. You will get professional design options and if you don't like, you can simply ask for ReDo.
Mostly they comply the customer's requirements to prevent lower rating.
I suggest you to go for High CTR banner makers. Not everyone understands it but that is the only way to make the campaign profitable.
Your hourly rate will be higher than what you will end-up paying. :)

I design/edit all of my ads on my own.

I have previous years of video editing experience in Vegas and After Effects, so that makes things easy for me.

I can recommend Animoto for videos and Canva for photos! These are great beginner options.

I recommend canva really easy to use and loads of great resources on there

in my experience there are 3 ways first is hire a freelancer or hire services in your local area or hire an in house designer that create high quality but for recruit the designer please check their background first

honestly the easiest way is to buy templates on graphicriver and edit them in photoshop/illustrator

Used to buy templates on GraphicRiver and there are plenty, also hired some people on Fiverr and never got disappointed. In both cases it's very cheap.
