Yes they work. But it’s like everything in seo; there are Lots of variables when it comes to the pbn and there are even more variables when it comes to your overall seo strategy.
 
Yes it can help you. But as the other members said you would need to add other elements to your SEO strategy. For instance I would compare quality pbn with buying some organic traffic from reliable providers, like Magicserp.
One thing you shouldn't forget: SEO is not a template, so it can really depends on the situation. On the other hand with the above mentioned mix you will be presumably able to reach your goals.

Well because if you buy a link from someone it is not a private blog network... the principle of the private blog network is that it is only you who knows his existence, not even your mother and girlfriend, and of course not a link seller... a pbn seller is an oxymoron
 
PBNs dont work long term in my experience. Unless you setup them on your own with human readable content and fresh domains that you registered yourself.

PBNs in fresh domains will need 6 months at least to give a good boost normally,
getting an expiring already indexed domain with some good links is the best

The difference is that the first option will work. The other one wont cause you cant find cheap expired domains these days.

There are numerous quality PBN service are there.

They only work if you link directly to your competitior's site! That's the only way PBN works
