SEO is about on page and off page, that' it. On page is basically writing content with proper keywords in the content. Off page is mainly getting links. There no coding involved in either activity.
Do I need to learn how to code before jumping into SEO?

It's actually a lot more than just writing content and getting backlinks. I guess if you're just doing basic on-page stuff, sure, you can get away with it. But knowing apache directives (like mod_deflate, how to properly 301 redirect), what basic html tags mean, how css and js can affect page load speeds...I use this knowledge pretty much everyday.

That stuff you're talking bout, how much does it contribute to the ranking factors ? Very minor compare with content and backlinks is my contention.

These days you can get 99% of that stuff from stackoverflow.

Answer to your question, you don't need any coding skills to do SEO.
But you would eventually end up picking some skills along the way out of curiosity.
Don't overstuff your brain with knowledge which it doesn't need right now. Focus on learning and implementing whatever you can grasp and improvise.
The other things will just happen automatically and you wouldn't even realize that you learned something more than SEO
I can say this since it happened with me.. I was trying to learn everything at once assuming it will make my work easy and I'll understand more but instead I lost focus and interest both. For a while I didn't touch anything since it was all so messed up.
I am not saying its bad and you shouldn't learn coding, it could turn out better for you since no 2 humans are same but then why would u like to experiment with your time and money.
Rest it's your decision

I wouldn't say it was very minor. Could you imagine not being able to redirect a page, or speed it up by adding expire headers or compressing data?
But without basic knowledge of code, how would you know what to look for, or how to deploy/edit the code properly

There is no need to learn Code for entering into SEO, but knowing some basic HTML and CSS add some more weight to your profession.

Not really my friend. If you have some idea then its cool.
But to do seo , its not necessary to have the idea over codes and all. SEO is basically comes under online marketing category, which you have to understand.
And the basic codes which are needed for onsite seo , can be done using some google search.
