Yes you are right, Poor backlink may affect your blog from future Google updates and you won’t be able to make it futureproof, So be very particular about the quality of the backlink that you build.

Guest posts do harm.
One of the worst things about guest posts is when the guest blasts your URL with links. They use your content site as PBN and blast it with tier 2 links. Then even if you remove the article there's nothing you can do to clean the mess afterwards.

100% it harms, trust me I am a victim.
Firstly, the person who is buying from you will make poor tier 2 backlinks.
Secondly, they may have a spammy worthless website.
However, if the buyer has a better website than yours which has more DA/PA/UR/DR than your website, then you may consider.
Finally, do not accept guest posts from everyone just because they are paying you money, especially on your main money sites.
Accept a limited number of posts only per month.

I almost never allow a guest post on any of my sites unless the person is someone I know well.
Like @bartosimpsonio says, people often abuse your site after they see that.
I do have a page on one of my sites that cites a number of well known SEOs with non-live links to their sites. One would have to copy and paste the link to go to the site mentioned.
That helps with fewer outbound links and keeps the site from getting abused with all kinds of wacky links so the get some SEO benefit to their sites.

I had a guest post whore site before, got ~2000usd per month from guest posts but I had a pretty strict requirement. Like at least 3500 word article, no adverts must include links to authority sites etc.
But anyway, never again I'll accept a guest post
For that site, it was good, because of free articles, but quite pointless ones anyway.
I would suggest, accept a guest post only from well-known people or someone who pays at least 300usd lol.
Edit: But I nofoll0wed all links after 3 months anyway because no one read the rules where I told that all paid links will be made nofoll0w after 3 months and deleted after 6.

I usually ask them to which site they want to link out to and which topic they want to write about.
If that seams fine once i receive the content i go over it. If its good, great. Regarding tier 2 links, its true, they can blast you with shit links, but that can happen anyway.

The obvious example is: http://www.brashgames.co.uk/ - They got hammered because got caught of selling links (it got big in the news, including Forbes and the like) - no manual penalty as their pages are still indexed, but just look at the traffic drop:

Most likely yes. However when your next buyer take a look at your link profile... well lets say that I do not like to buy posts from website that have 2k fake RDs and I am probably not the only one.
Truth to be told, in the 90% of the cases those that spam their guest post with shitty GSA links are in "essay writing" niche. As long as you avoid this ones like a plague, you most likely will be fine.

Hey this is quite interesting didn’t know this, so if one accepts guest posts and makes the link no follow or doesn’t put up link then his site shall be safe right?. Also one should not write on his site he’s selling links as I have seen many sites sell links on their site. Also what does links to an authority site mean in a guest post

Yes.. as long as the article is well written and unique. Guest posts could greatly improve your metrics and drive more traffic.
I can't agree more. Same applies with PBNs when you reveal the full URL to someone then find weeks later they're blasting 20k shitty links a day to try to add an additional boost.

- Second its harmful when you point give a link to site not in niche of current website
- Even if spammy baclinks are produced one can disavow links
- Taking above average request for guest post puts your website on suspicion mode

I run 6 sites that accept a lot of guest posts, no charge for posting, high content requirements, all sites vetted.
In the past couple of years, I haven't had any issues, no blasting of links. I post on average 7 guest posts a month, per site.
I've gotten a nice bump in traffic from this, as I require they share the guest post on their social media.
Weirdest thing I've experienced is people refusing to post because I don't charge.

The bigger sites get away with it for sure. I saw an obvious paid guest post on a large tech news site (I think it's Mashable or Techcrunch). Some of the well-known news sites such as Huffington Post also do it.
