I perform this kind of test in past when i just copied some articles, use some synonyms for couple of words, add two or three extra paragraphs of good content and i just outrank the competition without struggling on link building or other strategies. Just doing good content. Test done on low-volume keywords.
But be aware that you can have luck or not. Some of articles rank on positions like 100+, some of them outranked competition. It's a luck game. You can try, you have nothing to lose.

If their indexing is faster than yours then eventually they rank faster than yours and google will see, you are the one who is copying content.
