Myspace used to be one of, if not, the main platform of use until facebook came and took its place
I am from Germany and Myspace was never really big here.
Only ever used it for looking at cool American musician profiles.
When Facebook came on it was a completely different story. Literally everybody wanted to be on Facebook. You, your 60 year old parents, your 70 year old neighbours.
It was quite sad actually, because we had some good alternatives. StudiVZ (for university students) and SchülerVZ (for high school students), but Facebook left them deserted, within a few months everyone migrated to Facebook.

I think it must have been better those days, unlike what it is now when nearly everyone is under Facebook's whims and caprices. I look forward to the day their monopoly will be a thing of the past.
