Disappeared From Local Pack

Hey,

Im doing my dad's seo for his local business and last night I checked the local map pack and we were ranked #1 but when I checked today we were no where to be seen. I also checked at the stores physical location and we still didn't show up (this really threw me off).

Is there a good explanation to why this happened?

When did the site go live and when did you add in the google maps and so on. Did you have any reviews? I would not put reviews up on a new listing yet. Could be a dance to find were your position needs to be.

So the website has been live for a while now but I redesigned it 3 weeks ago and revamped the on page seo. Iv been also focusing on getting google reviews but even with all the new reviews we are jumping all over the place lol.
 
Love bright local. Definitely worth the 29 bucks for your dad if you're doing one location. And definitely pay for the citation service
 
There's an update going on and they'll fuck with new sites. Give it 3 months at least to age and start to become stable. Nothing else you can do. IMO latest Google updates are broken, stale index. But ad money's good so nothing we can do about it.

I concur from what I am seeing in the hospitality verticals.

Businesses that have no business being in the packs are showing up above previously strong listings.

I am forming a view that over optimising is playing a part and where a business can score high on citations it needs to shine all the other factors to maintain position.

Up till a few Months ago I have seen businesses dominating local packs for dozens of kw searches. This is the big change this year the changes make this nigh on impossible now.

Not all packs are affected at once. Its like they have a team moving through the kw's and index doing a lot of the work by hand.
 
I wouldn't rule out that you changing on page optimization didn't have anything to do with it! Would definitely need more info to be able to give accurate help.
 
Quick Update: Both my map pack and SERP ranking have returned to the first page.

I do believe it was google just playing around with my updated pages.

Im assuming you have google my business set up. I can tell you what I did:

1) Optimized my GMB page with keyword rich images. I suggest 15+. Name the file of the image "service + city"
2) Get some local citations from here on the BHW forums or use services such as whitespark, brightlocal etc. I got a 25 citations from the ones I think were most important. Make sure your NAP is consistent.
3) Asked clients to write reviews.
4) I also made a google my maps with 200 embeds from konker.
5) Both general and local backlinks.

I used a lot of techniques from the guys at web2.0ranker.

These are the things I did to rank on the local pack.
