Directories still good?

Hello,

I am opening this thread because the other day I read an article saying that directories are not good any more and that Google don't like them since last update, but, for what I know on SEO what really matters is to have backlinks with High PA/DA websites to get your own high too, so if directory has a PA 72 / DA 66 / PR 5 like for example http://avivadirectory.com how can does that not matter? Even if directory is not same niche there is a category for it and that should do it... so, my question basically is do directories matter or not after update? is article complete BS?

Please advice!!

They basically just massively devalued the links coming from directories. The websites I had built that relied heavily on directory subs got smashed with Panda. The ones that didn't were fine
 
Some are good like dmoz, others arent. I have a few directory links.
 
Directories have several pages, unless you are on the front page, you might not get the "full effect of the PR". Secondly I understood something about the number of do follow outbound links can decrease the value of each link
 
Excess Posting of links of your website in Directories and bookmarking is not good according to the google update. It come under spamming. best way is to post your links on social networking websites.
 
But even a directory like avivadirectory with that PA/DA/PR?? Then what you recommend to make my websites PA/DA/PR higher?

There are two online directories that are still worth submitting your website to.
These are the Open Directory Project (DMOZ) and the Yahoo directory. Inclusion in either of these directories can be rather beneficial from an SEO prospective.

Also, including your website into authoritative local directories can bring you lots of targeted traffic.

Yes, online directories are not that important as they used to be. However, getting your site listed there is still a nice thing to do.
 
If it is a directory tightly related to your niche with submissions reviewed manually I say yes

For example realtors in New York for a real estate agent in New York

Otherwise I would stay away
 
Thanks a lot for the info guys but, personally I dont what to tell you, I been looking around some of my competitors and I can tell you that 2 of them that come above my site they have 80% of their links in high PA/DA/PR directories and if you analize their PA/DA is really high, so, I dont understand how this cannot matter no more, I get for example for massive directories submissions but for high PA/DA/PR ones more than DMOZ and Yahoo, how come does not matter, makes no sense to me because if this was true then my competitors would not rank as good as they do.
Can someone be more specific why directories are not what they use too? Because personally this sound like one of urban legends from matt cuts like the one with the Google +1 button one

It's partially because directories are considered as spam, it's pretty much a website with a ton of links on it which you ask for your link to be put on. Backlinks are supposed to vouch for your website, you're not supposed to ask websites to vouch for you.
 
Good links are good links and this is one. The fact that directory links have been devalued does not mean they have no value, its just that thousands f them do not count for what they used to.

You have to stop thinking abut the source other than quality. If the site is a quality site, then the link wil be quality link.

In the case of directories, especially if it is related to your niche or location.

A PA 72 / DA 66 / PR 5, yes, I'll take one of those everyday, that is if it didn't cost $150 a year.

Exactly my point, but there tons of directories that don't charge you more than 20$ and has a PA / DA over 50 for sure and avivadirectory was just an example :D.

I understand that people say that directory links are devalued or there not what they use too, but, what I personally don't get is if helps your domain PA/DA rise so much then how come is devalued as they claim? For example I had put my domain in 2 directories that charge me 20$ each for permanent listing with a PA/DA Over 60 and surprise surprise my PA/DA has rise 1 point since then believe me I check like 2 days before listing and now 2 days after listing, so, how are directories devalued if this happens with just 2 links on them? For what I understand the biggest point of SEO for what I know is too make your domain's PA/DA the highest possible like happens with Moz for example so, your site is always well ranked and well seen by search engines.

Thanks again everyone and sorry if I am a bit of a pain but for me this statement makes no sense and I am trying to make it have some sense.
 
I agree with macky13. Do only quality and seo friendly directories.
 
Big directories that require approval, like DMOZ are good. Niche relevant directories are good.

If your website is about dog food, a link from a tech directory is not going to help.
 
^^This. Besides big directories like DMOZ, Yahoo, Business.com, you want to stick with niche relevant paid or tightly managed sites. Stay away from free for all bullshit. Always look at it this way...if any Joe Blow can submit a link to it, why would Google give any value to it?

Because has a High PA/DA/PR that is why, and also your theory is not very good since in any website you can submit a link you just need to reach a webmaster and he will you your link in exchange of money or something else but, any joe blow can do this... so, I don't know what to tell you.... and I am not talking about free BS links, I am talking about high DA/PA/PR Link Directories that have paid listings like for example www.avivadirectory.com or www.botw.org any of this list for example http://info.vilesilencer.com/blog/?p=442

I agree in directories with low PA/DA to be BS but, I dont agree on the ones with high PR/PA/DA like the ones on this list.

Just one thing macky13 how do you know this is not good according to the new Google Update? This is wronte anywhere? Also what you call excess since I am only doing directories with really high PA/DA Over 50 minimum, and there not a lot of those maybe 500 total in all over the internet

Based on my experience, virtually all directories are worthless. You don't need to analyze their source codes to understand that even the best of them are nothing more than glamorized link farms.

Hey Gormago, first of all thanks for the reply,

That is the thing I dont understand, why people call now a days link directories as link farms, for what I had understand before Google considers a page a link farm when has over 100 links, correct? most of this directories I mention they show maybe 30 links per page with pagination, so, in Google eyes should not be consider a link farm, right? Or I am missing something?
