Hey Guys,

Do any of you have experience getting general liability insurance for a business in the US? I'm currently running all of our projects under the same LLC. This includes eCommerce (+ 3rd party marketplaces) as well as affiliate sites, which has been an issue for insurance companies.

Basically, I want to cover the company for:
1. On the eCommerce side copyright + trademark cases (if we get sued)
2. On the affiliate side especially things like libel and slander (if we get sued)

Both scenarios are rather unlikely (hopefully), but the company is at a size where protection is a no-brainer.

So far I've spoken with:
- Geico: no options
- TheHartford: didn't like that everything is running under the same company. I could only get some partial insurance that wouldn't cover my main areas of concern.
- Hiscox: also wasn't able to insure us

Any suggestions to make my life easier?

Insurance is really not designed to cover those things if you are outside of your lane.

"copyright + trademark cases" - those are pretty cut and dry usually.

"Libel and slander" - it will probably be libel and not slander should it come to that but that is more lawyer than insurance guy.

Hit up an attorney and expect to pay a retainer for those situations or at least expect to pay an upfront fee for consultation and then an hourly rate should issues arise.

I think you are in the wrong neighborhood expecting insurance to handle that for you.

LLCs are cheap, why not just have separate entities?

Honestly, I just wanted to avoid the hassle of separate accounting, bank accounts, insurance, freelancer contracts,... but... you definitely correct. Splitting the projects into separate entities is probably my best choice.
