Lately, I’ve been noticing something really interesting (and confusing) in local SEO results, and I wanted to get your thoughts on it.
For the same long-tail local keyword, the results are completely different across platforms:
When I checked:
Google Maps shows one set of restaurants :https://prnt.sc/kDoXgevaBJHT
Google AI Mode shows a different curated list : https://prnt.sc/TN3-UJ2SlXHD
ChatGPT gives another variation : https://prnt.sc/WiGfWqA3cGJP
There are a few overlaps, but most of the results are totally different across all three.
This raises a few questions for me:
Are we now dealing with 3 different ranking ecosystems instead of just Google?
Should we optimize separately for:
Maps
AI Overview
AI tools like ChatGPT
1. What signals actually influence inclusion in AI-generated results vs traditional rankings?
2. Is brand mention + entity authority becoming more important than backlinks in this context?
3. How do we even track or measure visibility across these platforms?
Right now, it feels like:
Maps = Local SEO (traditional)
AI Overview = Hybrid (SEO + semantic authority)
ChatGPT = Entity + data aggregation layer
My main confusion:
Are we supposed to build three separate strategies, or is there a unified approach that works across all?
Would love to hear from anyone testing this seriously or seeing similar patterns.
What are you guys doing to adapt to this shift?
