Backgound: My boss mentioned that GSC is not good at looking at website traffic trends, whereas SEMrush can do this. But I was wondering, in GSC, when viewing the keywords obtained by each page, we can see the trends by comparing the data, right? However, it seems that the keywords displayed by GSC are more scattered, while SEMrush is more focused.

My questions are:
  1. What are the limitations and advantages of these three tools in SEO?
  2. When researching a kind of SEO data or research, is a particular tool better?
  3. Do you have different preferences in these tools for different SEO studies?
Thanks for everybody's help!

Lol, ur boss knows nothing then.

GSC is far superior in checking traffic trends than 3rd party tools that guesstimate. If you actually care about your traffic.

For research in different topics, third party tool might be necessary.

I use GSC as it's the most accurate tool out of the three you mentioned.
I find semrush shows just random numbers when it comes to traffic, ahrefs is more accurate.

The only problem with GSC is that you can see the stats only for the sites you own.

Gsc is what users actually searched for including spelling mistakes, various ways users type keywords to find what they are looking for and reached your site.
Semrush and ahrefs use Google ads keyword planner to collect keywords volume and difficulty.
With semrush and ahrefs you can get lot more keywords in general for a perticular topic. Gsc only has keyword your site is getting impressions for.
It may sound confusing use the tools for few weeks you will figure it out.

GSC is a tool offering accurate, direct data from Google. SEMrush excels in comprehensive keyword research, competitor analysis, and traffic trend analysis, making it ideal for all-around digital marketing. Ahrefs is renowned for its extensive backlink database, powerful keyword research, and content exploration tools. For more in-depth analysis, SEMrush and Ahrefs are indispensable, but you should base your analysis on GSC.

GSC is great for understanding how Google perceives your site, as well as tracking clicks, impressions, and average positions. SEMrush surpasses it by offering comprehensive keyword analytics, traffic information, and competitor analysis. For SEO research, GSC is essential for tracking your site's performance directly from Google. SEMrush is better suited for in-depth keyword research, competitive analysis, and trend tracking.

GSC is always better to get more insights about your website. For keyword and competitor research use ahrefs and SEMrush.

the best is ahrefs , somehow costly but use group buy so over ahrefs is best analysis and research tool for SEO optimizations .

Paid SEO tools data's won't be accurate as GSC. For checking traffic, click rate and impressions you need to check in GSC only. For competitive analysis and other site audits you can use paid tools like Semrush and Ahrefs
