Have you read any books about SEO, namely black hat SEO? Were they good? Do you recommend them?

I do a little bit of both, with ebooks you have to be careful because they try to sell you at every page to buy something else...lol.
Ebooks are good if you have a limited time and want to learn something like pinging or rss feeds ect. Forums are good because you can network and meet new people, also see what really works and what doesn't. Way less hype!

This is just my suggestion. But yeah books/forums/chats/networking is all beneficial. Reading books would be the first choice because you would at least have an idea of what your talking about. If someone would ask me how do i use a computer, that tells me that this individual doesnt have any idea of what he/she is doing nor doesnt take the initiative to learn on their own. But if someone were to ask me how can they fix their printing network problem. That they've done everything you would do in troubleshooting such a problem then that tells me that this person at least knows the basics of what their asking and motivates me to try and help them further. So learning from one source isnt such a good idea. My personal training came from hundreds of different places. From schools/books/chats/forums/networking. And i've yet to finish because this industry is so vast its a never ending engine.

A book I would recommend is The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work and What to Do About It. This book will get you thinking in the right frame of mind when it comes to finding ways to replicate yourself without having to do extra work. The great thing about blackhat is that you have the ability to use the power of scripting to eachive your goals.
There is a book for black hat SEO called "Project Black Hat". A good book to get you started.
Then once you start making money I would recommend how to setup a corporation (like LLC). This will allow you to split your revenue into companies so if you get burned by adsense or another source you wont loose all your money. I would recomend setting up an LLC for every 10,000 you get monthly.

I'm no expert, but a couple of books that people all over the net keep recommending (and I join them with my little $.02) are:
The World is Flat - Thomas Friedman
It's a much more in depth and nerdy version of 4 hour work week. Which, fwiw, is basically a crap burrito. A thin wrapper of marketing surrounding a thick, chewy center of indigestion causing glop. It's VERY much like most of the ebooks out there today: useless but emotionally engaging. It's the diet coke of advice, just one good idea: outsourcing. Which Friedman covers in a LOT more detail. If you buy it, get it from Barnes and Noble 'cuz they'll let you return it if you don't like it.
The Science of Getting Rich - Wallace Wattles

It's sort of "Think and Grow Rich, Motherf%^ker!"
It's a really shortened, "Shut up and start visualizing" tour de force. I recommend reading both. Think and Grow Rich is available online for free also, but atm I can't remember where from. If you can't find it PM me and I'll try to dig up a link.
Not strictly SEO/blackhat related, but it'll teach you a lot about how to think about the learning curve.

I have read white hat seo ebooks, etc and they are mostly OK... nothing earth shattering. I do listen to lots of marketing audio books (seth godin, etc) when I'm driving and find they're pretty cool for coming up with new ideas, sites, schemes.

I think Seth Godin's meatball sundae would be a good deal for all of you here. He is the highly ranked blogger on most ranking engines and has received several awards. his writing stimulates creativity, clarity and lots of ideas. He writes awesome and inspiring!
