Did I waste my time learning python?

For a while now I was slowly learning python more and more, but I think I might have been given false advice and I should have gone with javascript if I want to get into web development as a freelancer.

What do you think? Been on it for like 6 months now, kinda learned the basics and just start to look into django etc, but I am not sure if that is really that useful because now that I am more and more involved with this coding stuff, I see JS React pop up everywhere and I am not sure if I should just switch over.

My goal is just to pick up some projects on upwork once I am proficient enough. Don't want to land a corporate job, even if that pays better.

The reason you see react pop up everywhere is because most of the people who get into programming these days are looking for jobs in web development and react is the easiest way to get to it.

Just continue learning Django and you will find many opportunities in the field, don't worry too much about this
 
Okay, thanks for the replies. I thought I had gone with the wrong option here. I am already slow with the learning, as I do a lot of other things.

It’s really a shame that there is no unskilled worker online. You always gotta be an expert in something.

Any other tips for getting my foot in the industry and making my first bucks as a programmer? I was thinking learning web development, mainly backend, and then go to upwork and look for projects there. Viable? Or do I need corporate experience to even be taken into consideration?
 
Not a waste of time, but it depends on how proficient you are.
No harm in learning other languages.
What is in demand now may not be relevant in 2/5/10 years.
 
The way I got into programming is that I learned the things I need. Learning Python or any other programming language is not a waste of time. Figure out what your goals are and study accordingly.
 
It depends on what you want to accomplish. But Javascript is more versatile than Python. You can basically do everything with Javascript. Although the amount of libraries for certain things like AI or data processing is incredibly remarkable. I would rather choose to know and use JS and Python than just one. Nowadays, just one language is insufficient unless you are in a super-specific job and you don't want to move from there ever.

Yeah, sales is not easy for me. I am good with it face to face, but online it's so unpersonal.

Unfortunately any job and any form of income online is based on how you sell yourself. You won't stick out by skill.
 
What you learned is not a waste of time. But, if you want to have a career as a frontend developer you should learn HTML, CSS, and Javascript as well.

You don't need to stop learning new concepts in Python though.

I think you will only have problems finding your first projects, because usually people are not willing to take orders from beginners.

Python is good especially for coding automated scripts but I don't think it's the ideal language for web development.
However, rates for making automated scripts are better than web development and competitors are not that much.
I don't really think it's a waste of time, learn to utilize it btw

Imposter syndrome is strong though... I don't feel ready for anything and i don't know when I will be ready to take on a job, even entry level. I mean, if they want me to build them hangman and snake games, I am their man! :D

I am currently doing a two courses on udemy. 100 days of code for python, and by the same woman, the web developer course.

That can easily be faked though. Just need to ask my friend to hire me on upwork for that. Currently doing a lot of work on fiverr in data entry and with webcrawlers, but fiverr sucks and it's always more up and down than when I dated this bipolar chick. Jeez. One week you get 20 orders a week and you need to decline half of them because you don't have the time, then the next couple of months you don't get any new clients at all any more even though nothing changed and all your reviews were positive.... Horribly inconsistent.

I have a few automation gigs up on fiverr but no one seems to be interested. Might be a marketing problem, as the impressions are low, but I haven't got a single message over it in 3 months or so that I have it up now.

Out of curiosity: What process do you automate the most? Maybe I just need to get more specific with this gig.... Not sure.
 
Learning is always useful, it will not useful now, but the knbwledge you gained on that skills never go wasted, all the best.

The basics? Like 6 months or so. I am quite slow as I don't always have time to focus on learning and studying, and once I haven't studied in a while, I have to go back and refresh on concepts from earlier.
