How much damage would an OCR with a human-comparable success rate do to the Indian economy? Something that can solve captchas at a drastically cheaper rate than human decaptcha services? We're talking $.25-50 per thousand solved as opposed to $1-2. What would be the effect on the world economy? How quickly would Google (the creators of the "unbreakable" reCaptcha) implement an alternative?

Just curious as to people's thoughts on this, and whether or not an OCR that "beat" reCaptcha would be a beneficial influence on the world economy. The topic arose in an intellectual discussion today and I'm interested in BHW's thoughts on the issue.

I highly doubt the economic impact of an OCR that correctly entered a captcha code would be that significant, to the Indian economy or globally. Most likely it would result in a lot of spam, and in turn, large services e.g. Facebook, Google, Yahoo, Twitter etc requiring a phone number in order to register an account (something Facebook and Google kind of already do - Google at the point of sign-up, Facebook when making certain posts).

Judging by the title and content of your post is sounds like you think a lot of Indians work figuring out captcha codes all day? :S

Do you really think captcha-solving is a such large chunk of India's GDP, that if replaced, it'll cause a dent?

The technology presently do exist, but the major automation tools must get compensation from captcha solvers.

India is a much bigger country and they would not even feel it.

See, that was my thought but a colleague of mine felt the significance of the captcha-solvers to India's economy was great enough to make a lasting impression given the presence of a reCaptcha breaker.

Also, do you guys think a reCaptcha breaker would be worth marketing? Or better to keep it to oneself for personal use? Perhaps for monetization by automating account creation and other tasks that require captcha-breaking, at a cheaper rate than the competition?

It would probably be an Indian who invented it - therefore his millions would filter down into the economy anyhow

This premise is laughable, you're saying the Indian economy - like a billion people - are all reliant on solving captchas for a living?

It would take a world war with India being the primary focus to even put a dent in their economy. Not a freaking OCR.

Keep in mind, my point was exactly that: India's economy relies on way more than data entry. This program would obviously deprecate more than just captcha-solvers. The entire "data entry" field would be virtually obsolete. But India's GDP is so diversified, their are so many tasks that need humans doing them besides data entry that such a program would have a minimal, most likely unnoticeable, impact on their economy and certainly the world economy.

You didn't say that in the original post, you were talking about captchas and nothing else.

No, it would not have a significant impact.

Last time I checked India's GDP was 1.3 trillion and All online commerce combined was 500 billion so you can take captcha solving as .00001% of the total 500 billion, so this much effect it will have on economy.

all figures in USD.

These are the exact type of figures I was hoping would be brought up. Lol my colleague refuses to speak on the issue any more; we're just working on the OCR in silence now :)

It's 1.73 now and even if you add all internet marketing works it won't be effected much

Just solved 2800 captchas... need a break and then will go to solve captchas for another 6 hours. I am loving this job. I'm gonna be billionaire soon

India has the highest gold reserve.
Out of 3500 tonnes gold consumption worldwide, India alone consumes 1000 tonnes. plus largest Diamond cutting and polishing center of the World.

so...be sure worlds 9th largest economy has very little to do with captha

OP, what did you smoke today?

Please ffs...

Why do you ask such a question ? Why any country economy would feel anything if whole captcha solving market would disappear in second ???
This is micro-industry which doesn't have any value for macro-factors. On other side we have SEO which making millions of $ for companies in each country, that would cause some minor changes but still nothing for whole economy of single country.

Reacting and adjusting is foundation of modern business.

You do not need to worry.

BTW where did you studied business if you're asking such question ;)
