Death of php?

A lot of "cool coders" are starting to use ruby and python to develop web applications.

However, PHP is the only language that I know and I can automate almost everything in php. Plus, being sever side, it's really fast at what it does. I'd recommend anyone to learn php because of the simplicity involved.

For the moderately simple server side apps php is really great! It has so many features in the default libraries that you have just to read the manual to get something done quickly.

Trend or popularity of php definetally drooping down, but its not going to die it's not organic anyway :).
 
Mobile app development is completely different than php development and it's never dieing lol :D
 
Personally i think mobile apps and web apps do have relation. From a marketer stand point, you will want more people spend more time on your app. With the domination of mobile device, people will spend less time on the traditional websites but more on their phones, tablets. That's why i think making web app(using php in this case) only without an equivalent version for mobile is just not enough. Surely there are still a lot people use desktop but this number will reduce significantly in the future.
 
Is this a serious question? Having an iPhone application is all well and good, but if it is client / server, what is the server side going to be coded in? PHP is all server side, there will always be a need for server side applications, and PHP is one of the quickest & simple way of writing them. PHP, Ruby, Perl, RoR etc. it's a matter of choice and none is more prevalent than the other. I didn't mention ASP.net cos thats shite.
 
PHP is pretty much all I do. To be honest, I share similar fears that PHP and websites in generally will eventually be outdated by apps, but even so, there is still a LONG lifetime PHP has left to live... I've still been brushing off my Java and learning my way around the Android SDK, and will eventually learn C# - because that's definitely where the market is going...
 
Out of all the reasons not to use PHP, the fact that mobile development is growing is the by far the worst.
 
You are WRONG.It is true that a lot of people might know PHP, but it is not dead at all and will not be dead very soon.
 
PHP is the most outsourced skill in the world to date. Fact.

PHP will get stronger, it powers basic every website you use. You think the worlds need for websites is going to decline? Why would anyone come up with an alternative when PHP is so easy to learn and develop with and does an outstanding job.

HTML5 will replace java/objective visual C as the mobile language for apps. It just will.

PHP is a fundamental component for any HTML based app.
 
yes facebook does use php, but they translate it into c++ because php is so damn slow. all big sites are usually built with .net or java because of better scalability

Ffs, you are saying that PHP is slow and on the next sentence you are promoting two languages that are ultra slow. Make up your mind :D

Oh, and obviously, Facebook is a startup since they don't have scalability concerns and just chose to go with php for the shit and giggles, right? :o

as you can see both java and c# outperform php

i think the question is not put correctly.

PHP is not dead and not going today, as the guys above indicated, its even expanding compared to asp/.net etc...(wordpress,drupal FB - all use PHP and they are very common today).

but yes, if you're looking at the future of the web, say 5-10 years from now, i also assume that the majority of developments will be apps. i believe desktops and laptops will expire, and we will get most of our web content through a mobile device (imagine that you can connect your mobile to a mouse, keyboard, and a screen...).

so if you want to develop as a programmer, i'd say, mobile apps are the internet of the beginning of the 2000's. i'd go for that, especially android, which is presumed to bypass IOS within 5 years (i saw a research about it guys, don't take it so hard apple addicts...).

In what? Calculation of math? (that 's what they tested if you read the details about it). According to those tests, PHP and Python are 20-30 times slower that C#/Java.

Well, here 's some news. Web apps are not filled with matrix equation solvers. If PHP and Python were so abysmally slow in real world web apps, neither Google, nor Facebook would have invested a huge amount of $$ in personnel and infrastructure on them. A slow language means they need to spend a lot more on hardware and believe me, they don't care to do that :D

See, a benchmark is as good as its tests and what you 're actually testing for. Want to do math? You 'll use Intel 's uber-optimized C dlls. Want to do Web? PHP and Python own everything else by far.
