they pointed it to 127.0.0.1 and left it there so as the attack went nowhere, the site was DOWN for that time, how does that help a business?

if you have a good server you rarely need a hardware firewall and if you do you need something on the level of a cisco pix 515e or a juniper netscreen... i dont have the model number handy, either way, the shitty little firewalls that datacenters have normally wont cut it, they just overload and blow their guts all over the place and hey presto your site is down just like it was before the firewall was in place

15mb/s? lol you apparantly dont have a clue how a ddos works. It doesnt utilize the whole bandwidth on 1 bot, it distributes the upload speed. Depending on the configuration of the bot and threading that could of been a botnet of about 5-10k, maybe more.

How it helps business? let me think
1. you dont overuse your bandwidth
2. you doesnt crash the server
3. you dont get suspended from hosting for overusing bandwidth limits.
4. you dont pay fines for overusing the bandwidth.

Usually when you get suspended for ddos from hosting, they dont give a shit about you. They toss you. The only way they would let you back on the server to retrieve the files is paying a fine which can reach hundreds of dollars.

Plus on top of that, the bots are sending packets to localhost. Eventually the bot will crash itself from packet overload, which is the main reason people that know the botscene dont DDoS. They lose thousands of bots in a matter of hours.
