Borrowing from the playbook of ransomware purveyors, the darknet narcotics bazaar Incognito Market has begun extorting all of its vendors and buyers, threatening to publish cryptocurrency transaction and chat records of users who refuse to pay a fee ranging from $100 to $20,000. The bold mass extortion attempt comes just days after Incognito Market administrators reportedly pulled an “exit scam” that left users unable to withdraw millions of dollars worth of funds from the platform.

In the past 24 hours, the homepage for the Incognito Market was updated to include a blackmail message from its owners, saying they will soon release purchase records of vendors who refuse to pay to keep the records confidential.

“We got one final little nasty surprise for y’all,” reads the message to Incognito Market users. “We have accumulated a list of private messages, transaction info and order details over the years. You’ll be surprised at the number of people that relied on our ‘auto-encrypt’ functionality. And by the way, your messages and transaction IDs were never actually deleted after the ‘expiry’….SURPRISE SURPRISE!!! Anyway, if anything were to leak to law enforcement, I guess nobody never slipped up.”

Incognito Market says it plans to publish the entire dump of 557,000 orders and 862,000 cryptocurrency transaction IDs at the end of May.

“Whether or not you and your customers’ info is on that list is totally up to you,” the Incognito administrators advised. “And yes, this is an extortion!!!!”

The extortion message includes a “Payment Status” page that lists the darknet market’s top vendors by their handles, saying at the top that “you can see which vendors care about their customers below.” The names in green supposedly correspond to users who have already opted to pay.

Crazy! Its pretty common for Darknet Marketplaces to disappear after some time, but this is something completely new and over 20% of their vendors have already payed the ransom.

" Incognito Market administrators reportedly pulled an “exit scam” that left users unable to withdraw millions of dollars worth of funds from the platform."

I guess only a piece of the cake wasn't enough.

$20k is probably peanuts for some of those sellers

It also guarantees absolutely NOTHING about not being extorted infact the only thing is does is show the extortionists that you're willing to pay, so that they can extort you again. You either covered your tracks or basically accept that you are fucked. Paying extortionists, especially virtual/anonymous ones, gets you nothing.

The guy must either be a lunatic or very, very confident in his OPSEC.

I'd be scared shitless to ever leave my house if I blackmailed some Mexican cartel bosses and high-level drug vendors.

Noob down:

Ouch!
We shall see how long the guy manages to stay alive now that he has been found.

I'm fairly certain that a good number of the vendors he blackmailed actually started a 'crowdfund' for his doxxing + putting the guy to sleep. It must've been almost $100k if I remember correctly.

They managed to nab him in the US too? He's gonna be so full of painful holes when he gets to prison, one way or another!

Okie Dokie. That's how you earn money, I guess (I wouldn't know, I barely have any).

Don't you just think, running around with barely anything but a lioncloth, hunting on some random island and away from civilization so much more peaceful & simple :)
Living on an island and it has people and supermarkets. I think they'd look at me funny if I started running around almost naked. Your plan sucks.

Wow that's crazy. Luckily I've never used the dark web and I never will after seeing this.

LOL! what an absolute moron. I never root for the authorities, but after all that he did, I think he actually deserved it.

Man, this is some unreal shit. This guy is going to get found one day and this wouldn't have been worth it. Good luck living your life looking over your shoulder constantly.

They found him already, got busted in NYC about a week ago.

people are so crazy they have the balls to commit such crimes online.
the FBI has eyes everywhere that might be the worst idea I could imagine anyone cold do.

Manage a darknet marketplace and on top of that extort his clients

I know in the last 2 years, Ukrainians who owned a few marketplaces have done such scams and left many vendors dry, and in fact, I see that range was from 20k up to 200k in funds in the stores. Balls are one thing, and insanity is another. The story with Ukranians who did the same thing 2 times did not go well; one admin ended in a car crash, and the second died because of drowning in a bathtub. The place in London, where? They were found to be bosses and finally executed. Why? Because when someone pulls a scam at this level, and someone lost even 20k in funds, and they run multimillion businesses, don't even think twice that some of the vendors don't have infos about the admins and owners of such marketplaces. This one, as above, is so stupid that I can't believe it, people. Many admins and owners will end up in bags soon. So, admins and owners of such shady marketplaces, the FBI is nothing to worry about but something more sinister, watch your six. Hear me out.

Anyone still into this business?

I was caught quickly. 9 months of time to do.

Someone made me feel like it's something like marketing on the internet but smarter.

I don't know. Is this smart? I think it was foolish to do it.

Doing it as a non pharmaceutical business or without a legally registered business doesn't make much sense.

It's too much risk for a buck.
