Dark UI or Light UI for Website?

I'm really torn if its better to have a dark UI or Light UI for the background on a site? A Dark UI seems sleek and elegant but it seems hard on the eyes for articles, while having a Light background seems outdated? What are your thoughts and preferences. Even if BHW has black background. :)

You should maybe look into color research and what emotions they invoke in humans. If you do a site about kitchen remodeling, do it with coloring that wakes positive emotions in the readers. If you're about motivation use colors that raise passion. Or maybe if you have a philosophical site, use some soothing colors.

I'm a noob, don't hit me, but that's how it works in the decoration world and I personally think it should be applied to the online world as well. So don't work on what you like, but on your intent or something like that.

Agree but how do you personally feel for instance reading an article against a dark background or light. Which is easier on your eyes or you can look at longer?

I use dark a lot, but these days I just put some eye saving option on or turn down brightness. Easy solution to rule all sites.

When it comes to the dark vs. light mode, both have some advantages. If we didn't look at the user's preferences, it would be best to have both for a user to choose from, or even deeper changing them based on the user's timezone (when it's dark outside, the user should have a dark mode, but when the sun is shinning user should have light mode). It is good for both - his health (eyes) and for readability (if the WCAG contrast ratio is applied properly).

I did that. I read that men and women like blue and green so I went with that. I literally changed everything on my site to those two colors. I think I overdid it :/

Depending on how you did it, wouldn't it be easy to tone it down? I like building on top of white as it's quite neutral and easy to start with light colors. I try to keep my images and such quite neutral as well.
