Dark patterns in website design, your opinions?

Hello blackhatters

I became acquainted with dark patterns a few years ago.

If you do not yet know what it is, dark patterns are UX or website designs specifically made to trick users into buying more expensive products, or perform an action without being 100% aware of what they are accepting.

Google will also explain this concept in detail.

This is legally a grey area but does any of you have experience with designs like these, and whats your opinion on them, seeing that we're already on a blackhat forum... :anyway:

Well for instance, you might have a design where your natural actions would have you accept a more expensive insurance for your travel, because the cheaper option is placed somewhere not easily seen.

Dark patterns can be seen in many lines of industries.

What do you mean when you say "white will be a more appropriate choice"? :)
 
Have been reading dark patterns the other day, for those new, wiki examples in my experience being

Roach motel (making it easy to enter, but hard to exit... sort of like walking into IKEA)
Subscription models, notice when you want that sweet free trial, but go into the account section looking to cancel it and its just so obscure and hard to find

Misdirection (when you're watching a video on some sketchy site, but theres two play buttons, one is an ad)
Good for ad or affiliate, click through models, especially if related to the niche

Confirm shaming (when you close the page, "are you sure you dont want to get mad rich and live a better life?")
Kind of like gaslighting, i get this crap when im paying for things in the store when it asks how much i want to give to charity. lol please

Bait and Switch (Advertise the new Samsung or Iphone at a very competitive - almost too good to be true price, end up on the site, but instead its out of stock :( but we do have the huwawei ! )
Just another ruse to get you into their store, like in thailand i paid a tuktuk driver to take me to the temples, and ended up at a luxury suit tailor

Privacy Zuckering (opt-out)
Yep, a few years ago, i found out you don't need to opt in to be an organ donor, you need to opt out if dont want to be one, pretty freaky man
 
I never did it myself, not my way of seeing business but I know someone who use it to make people subscribe to a monthly reception of products (candle niche) so every month the customers receive candles and have their credit card substract with the amount that was previously ordered.

It's a dark pattern but the guy notices that people are happy to receive again candles for 1,2,3 months more but decide after to cancel the subscription.

So the average customer value increases by X2 or X3.

Yeah these are tricks, I think dark patterns specifically means graphic design that places a box beneath another box, making the user more likely to enter "X"

Thats pretty intereseting dude, I would like to hear more about that..

Does he offer some kind of free/low-cost sample and bill their cards down the road?

Im pretty sure to do that the "right way" is by some kind of fine print.

The size and font often being very small
