Crazy Google Dance In The Last 24 Hours

I thought I'd escaped this when everyone first started talking about it, but 3 of my sites more than halved in traffic in the last 2 days and consequently earnings have dropped to almost nothing. I hadn't done a massive amount of backlinking as they're fairly low competition - mostly blog commenting and a few pbn links (not my own, but from what I consider to be a fairly secure provider). Content is high quality and the sites are pretty much white hat bar the few pbns. Going to leave things a few days and see if rankings come back before I do anything. With Amazon dropping commission rates and now this, 2017 ain't turning out to be such a good year so far!

Just wanted to add my 2 cents in here. We have over 200 sites and only 1 of the sites took a drop. All pages of the site dropped the same and the only thing we tried differently was to add G ad sense, 2 ads to every page.

After reading this page http://searchengineland.com/googles-fred-update-hit-low-value-content-sites-aimed-revenue-helping-users-271165
we removed them all.

Just 24 hours later most are bouncing their way back up.
So... Google doesn't want you to use their own advertising platform?

I monitor about 22 website rankings and noticed ranking shifts for most of them.

1 website went up to page 1 for about 12 keywords (previously pages 2-7.

There were about 5 websites that went from pages 1-3 down to pages 3-5. Interesting to see that they all dropped about 2-3 pages

The other websites have normal Google dance rankings of some small variations but not dramatic changes.

Here is my SEO strategy to help define what maybe went wrong for some of those sites stuck in pages 3-5
1. Manually created Web 2.0s, Social Media Profiles/Bookmarks, website profiles (natural and brand anchors)
2. Paid PBN links (small orders maybe 15 links per website) keyword anchors
3. Local citations manually created
4. Internal linking
5. Use my own web 2.0s and websites to post keyword anchors.

I think that my anchor text diversity needs to be increased to mostly natural URLs and brand names. Other than those comparisons I cant figure out what else needs to be done.

I also wanted to note that the sites that got hit have recently purchased PBN links in January and Feb. At first the rankings were increasing but now the rankings were better before I paid for the expensive PBN posts. Kind of frustrating

It cant be ad related, my site got hit while my compettitors that were below me still remain same position and very similiar ad placements i may be wrong but i dont think its ads because google makes money themselves with these ads on ur site

Question... ALL you you guys who got hit... were you making money off ads? I've heard that this only affected people who's sites had lots of ads.

You've only tested this on one website?

Similar position to you, I used a lot of conversational anchors, e.g. "Booking [keyword] for the day" and got hit pretty hard for that. Anchor text was certainly part of this.

My site picked up dramatically after the Feb. 8th Phantom update (I think that's the name). It increased in traffic by about 400%, then got hit hard on the March 8th Fred update. Since then, it's been super steady at about 1,400 visitors/day (down from 4,200 visitors/day). Site info:

  • 0 PBN Links
  • 0 Web 2.0 Links
  • 2 Ads Per Page
  • 0 Affiliate Links
  • 120 Articles
  • Article length = 700-1,200
  • SEO Optimized (but not overoptimized I'm pretty sure)
  • 100% outreach, topically relevant, DA30+ and DA20+ links on sites with traffic and authority
  • Naturalized anchor text
  • HTTPS
  • 1 second page loading time
  • 7 Moths old
WHAT THE HELL DID I DO WRONG?

I signed up just to post in this thread. Right now I have thousands of sites the vast majority of which are auto-generated, cloaked, and full of ads. The only underlying pattern to the ones that got hit is temporal. Any site I put up between August and January was destroyed for all keywords. The rest are untouched going all the way back to 2015 and up to last month when the last one was put up.

I'm posting as someone may consider it interesting that all of these sites are essentially identical as far as link profiles, content quality, number of pages, post length, etc. the only difference is when they were put up.

I had 2 sites hit for sure. A few other new ones have suffered a little - which could be normal fluctuation. None of these have any ads, or have at any point had ads.
