cpanel alternatives? Do you use one?

I asked for recommendations on cpanel alternatives. I am not sure how that was an invite for team mean girls to come into the thread and call me cheap. Was it?

I`ll even extend this to free or lower cost cpanel alternative. One shared hosting company I used "fatcow" literally had a cpanel ripoff they called webpanel. It was almost exactly the same thing with a different name. Their parent company owns it and it gets used by all the subsidiaries. Has to be others like that.

cPanel is for hosting companies and big users conducting big businesses. It was not intended for the average user like you to fork out $17 every month to host a simple wordpress site. Why are you even seeking a vps? Shared hosting is perfectly fine for 95% of the website owners, it's just a matter of finding the right host which delivers what it promises. Also there are far more overheads than the cPanel fee, someone has to take care of vps administration and if you don't want to do it then a vps is definitely the wrong choice, considering you ain't willing to pay for further services.

I tend to lose track of exactly how many but its more or less 60 wordpress sites and I have in the past run autoblogs and other resource intense functions. You see my problem?

Ahh, I see. Well, if each of your site is making you $1 a month then you can pretty much afford it. There is probably more to your situation that I don't know but a thumb rule is that you never work on more than a couple of sites until those make money.

All but like 10 of them support my real world business.. the rest I bought to either hold for later or just bought while under the influence... foolish but at least i didnt go for a ride in the car.

Ever wonder why people go start other forums? For real fatboy and kvm bumped in the thread offering advice I did not ask for.. I was not asking if I should abandon cpanel. I was wondering what free or low cost alternatives there are. Whoever negrepped me should really grow up or at least have sack enough to put your name on it. At least fatboy and kvm manned up.

With all due respect, you did ask for cPanel alternatives.

It is expected that if asked a question on a forum, that you would get answers as well as opinions and advice.
If you dont like the answer(s), dont ask the question(s).

Having said that, if you got 60 something sites and complaining about $15 a month (or whatever it is), it is quite clear you have over-extended your portfolio to the point where cashflow cannot support it. The best advice (even if you dont want it), is to consider consolidating your websites (or even selling the loss-making websites/domains) and only keep the profitable websites. Then focus on increasing the revenue for the websites that do make you money. You can always expand at a later point. So dump the sites/domains that are making you lose money or not making money, and this will free up cash that you can use to properly invest in your hosting infrastructure for sites that make money.

I use cpanel (and WHM) on a daily basis. However I am happy to pay the $15 a month for cpanel because it saves me time and money. Lets pretend I spend an hour a day doing cpanel/whm administration, and that an hour of my time is $20. Now if I used free alternatives (ssh or whatever), it saves me money, but it costs me time (lets say 2 hours). In that example I have saved $15, but I have wasted an additional hour (wasted $20) I could have used to make more money.


And yeah some people do go off and start their own forums, but most of them fail, and are missing the depth of knowledge here at BHW. Knowledge is power and here in BHW there are many well respected members who are more experienced than you (and even me).

So the answer to the question you asked is very simple: There is no alternative to cpanel unless you want to waste additional time you could use more productively.

What you don't know is I currently have a vps from a well regarded and recommended hosting provider here on bhw and I still have had those issues. I had them on shared hosting everything I have tried. So if I am going to have these issues no matter where I take my money why not save a couple bucks I can dedicate towards something that makes money? I don't see that there is anything wrong with wanting the best value for my dollar. If you do? Well.. like thats just your opinion right man?

kvmcable's post was excellent. Both he and fatboy gave you excellent advice. Same advice I would have given too.

directadmin is decent. also ispmanager for smaller things. but i sitll prefer cpael the most

I'm using http://vestacp.com/, very simple and free

Use webmin / Kloxo. Though they are much more tougher to handle, but still better than SSH. Make sure your server has more than 512 mb RAM because these software can kill quite a bit of memory and your server will run slow if you use them. One way to run the server faster if you have shortage of RAM, is to stop the service once you are done with your changes.

i use two homemade file managers and both do almost everything that cpanel does, only easier and faster.

i only use cpanel for passwords, tables, or fantastico.

Although it is not free, you can get a one time license with InterWorx. They have great support and take security very seriously, which is nice in this day and age.

Why not stop the service by SSH when done with the changes, and start again if needed?

Hi there are many alternatives , few are paid and few are free like : direct admin , Plask are paid .....but exact copy of cpanel and free is "zpanel" , you can just look at here http://www.zpanelcp.com/

kloxo is the best option IMHO.

ServerPilot (serverpilot.io) is a good cPanel alternative that's free for my purposes. I haven't needed the paid features yet.

Like many other people, I would recommend ZPanel since it is 1) open source and 2) free. It is also secure unlike Kloxo; it is also regularly updated for every bodies convenience.
