Correlation between buying Adwords and increased rankings?

I have no hard data to back this up, but it just seems like websites that rank on the first page often have an ad spot on the top too.

Now the obvious reason is that websites on the first page make more money and thus have money to spend buying Adword spots.

But I wonder if there is another reason, basically, if you "play ball" with Google (spend $$$ on ads) your rankings will increase.

It doesn't make sense because you would think Google wants you to spend ad money and giving higher rankings reduces the need to buy ads.

I'm just looking for thoughts and opinions... thank you!

I doubt it since this would would cause a riot with webmasters everywhere. Not only that, it would make Google look hypocritical since the websites that appear in the SERPs are supposed to be based on "quality" and not how much money the webmaster can pay Google.

You might see high ranking websites bidding on their own keywords to increase their chances of being clicked on or to make their business website look legitimate.

It's not a direct correlation, it's indirect and yes it does exist.

By spending lots you get a dedicated manager. That manager will do wonders for you.
 
Unless they give better ones to those spending TONS the ones I've talked to are not exactly gurus. They want to figure out ways to make you spend MORE, not help you optimize for sales and spend LESS.

Well I donno how it is today. Years ago I had the "privilege" (of managing a 3rd party account with $). I got great info straight from Grayskull Castle.
 
Anyone believing this is a complete idiot and doesn't have any clue about running a business like Google. If Google pulled this off they'd be regulated and sued into oblivion. They've given numerous public statements that buying ads has no effect on rankings, so unless you believe a suicidal dipshit is pulling the strings at Google, the thought alone is a complete joke.
 
Its because there are many internet noobs who are older and have $$$ who think that the first results on google are the best companies.
So even if you have the 1 position in google adwords will get you some additional customers if you own a product
 
I don't to understand SEO but here's my experience:

I have a website that have only few random backlinks, only 5 backlinks maybe, then, I promote the website in google adwords targeting 3-5 keywords
I spend $100 a day on adwords, and after 6 month, now my website is ranked no.3 in 2 keyword that I promoted using google adwords, I don't know why
I check my backlink, still have few around 10

So tell us how do things really work over there at Google? Do they pay well?
 
Holy Smoke! Are you serious? My logic don't want me to believe this but as I'm going to start a campaign soon, my gut says it should work :). Can you please upload any proof, of course hiding identifiable info. Would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Yes let me just dig through my historical conjecture file on blackhatworld so I can back up some noob who thinks resurrecting old posts to raise post count is a great idea, not to mention so original as no one else does it!!!!!
 
The company I work for spends 7 figures on AdWords, I can tell you first hand it does not improve Google rankings.
 
I'm just guessing here, but I think it might help you, if your site is optimized well for user experience and you are not getting much targeted visitors yet. Reason behind this is that Google can gather more user behavior data from your site faster, which will help you to gain (or lose in case of bad UX) rankings.

Direct correlation, 100% no.
