    Greetings -

Assume that you have over-optimized your backlinks for one of your keywords. what is the best way to fix this?
[1] go back and change few of the backlink and make it something generic of brand name, OR
[2] leave the backlink as it is, and create more backlinks using generic and/or brand anchor words, OR
    [3] something else?!

    any advice is greatly appreciated.

    cheers

Press releases can flip the ratio quite a bit, but I would suggest changing the anchors if you can.

I would start by identifying and disawowing the really spammy links. If you are concerned about the anchor text, change it (if you can).

i have proved to myself that it is best not to use disavow tool unless you are flagged by google.

i was going to do this, but I am afraid if you do this, then google would understand that you have control over your backlinks! then again, maybe we are giving way too much credit to track all of this!

It's a good practice to keep an eye on your link profile and act in time. Being flagged means Google thinks there is a problem with your site and is already likely taking action (demotion in rankings). Of course, you are free to disregard my advice. :)

Btw, how did you "prove it to yourself" that you need to wait with using the disawow tool until you're flagged?

multiple different sites over a year period, did many version of disavow files, and every single time that I had no disavow files, i ranked higher few weeks later. One case, i even had few rows in disavow file where the links were marked as super spammy by ahref and moz. still i ranked higher when there was no disavow file.

I'm not sure how this proves anything.

I surely wouldn't change anchors that are already live for some time. That's a blatant sign of manipulation and it's not really too hard to detect with an algorithm. I would advise to dillute the anchors with new backlinks, but fairly slowly.

Yes, changes to anchor text are easy to detect, but it doesn't mean Google will have a problem with it. Think about it in this way: if Google considered that link to be natural to begin with, that link should (by definition) be out of your control. In other words, in Google's eyes, any future change to the anchor text couldn't have resulted from your action and, therefore, you cannot be punished for it.

Btw, yes, diluting anchor text with new backlinks works just as fine, as long as you can get those links passed as "natural".

Well but it could mean the exact opposite as well, that the link is under the control. And why would anyone who has the link under control change just the outgoing anchor? That doesn't make sense. I do not say Google will slap you for that, I am just saying I surely wouldn't do that and rather play it safe with new links.

And the best solution here is prevention. Exact match anchors still matter, but not as much as they did in the past. So getting yourself slapped because of bad anchors is really not worth it.

You can change the existing anchors, but keep the velocity slowly. Don't change 20 anchors within 10 minutes (footprint if you use it on PBN).
Otherwise you can simply build new links with generic, url or branded anchors.

These days I have the same problem and I am in process of building new links to my pbn with generic/branded anchors.

Yes, this is an important point: avoid patterns. While changing the anchors on individual links will not harm you, doing so in bulk across many sites creates a footprint for Google to discover new PBN sites/networks. As a result, your originally natural links could quickly turn into unnatural ones.

Press release to dilute anchor text ratios seems the way to go.

As per my opinion, dilute anchor text with new backlinks by using generic or branded anchors are the best way to fix it.

Just dropped means, is it dropped in recent times or it was dropped in last fred update?
How long you were on the first page.
have you received any notifications Google regarding link building?
First of all, You have to check the back links. Whether have you lost any backlinks or not
If your answer is yes. Build more quality backlinks by mixing up main keywords, different long tail keywords, brand name and generic keyword. Getting niche relevancy links from the quality articles will help you to get back your top page.

Build more links to dilute the the density and give it time. Google is really slow in showing effects.
